More Amp Construction

So... whatcha got cooking there Paul? Looks like it’s certainly going to be heavy! ;)

It's a disturbingly large pair of 300B amps with a ridiculous pile of iron (none of it is mine sadly).

They started life as a pair of Paramount amps that got built on some huge chassis panels (12"x18"), but they didn't survive a trip with UPS. Luckily all the parts did survive, and now I'm going to attempt to build a shunt regulated 300B amp.

Just a warning, these are going to be purple, and there are good reasons for that.

Interesting, purple...

I remember there was a member at the Bottlehead forum that always used Purpleheart wood for her builds...

I’m really curious to see these come together. Purple and all. ;)

Yes, these were her amps. I suggested to the new owner that we reuse the remnants of the purple heart wood from the bases for the side panels, then make the chassis plates purple. It just so happens that in one spot in the circuit I need to burn off 150V, so there will also be an 0D3 letting off its pinkish-purple glow.

Paul, tell us about the wall o' vintage in the background of that shot... I really like that!

I did a big remodel of my workshop recently, and the white melamine gets to be a little clinical when that's every surface in the room, so I decided to wallpaper the one end wall without any cabinets on it. The old electronics catalogs are pretty fun to look at and sometimes have some helpful info, so I cut up a few choice selections.

That's such a cool idea, with bonus points for practicality!

Cool, I loved working thick 6061 for automotive stuuf..
Keep posting.
The real fun comes when you forget to scrub off that labeling, as that writing will show through powder coating quite clearly.

Purple is my favorite color.

Denatured alcohol and scotch brite pads on a drill. That's what I've used in the past with decent results.

I love the wall of old catalog pages, really great idea.

Most of the hardware mounted up without too many complaints. I had to order longer RCA jacks that will work with the 1/4" chassis, and I need to go to Fry's to grab some of those 1/2" clunky toggle switches for a power switch, but so far so good. There will be a gold anodized aluminum shroud covering the power transformer, which is why I haven't taken any effort to make it look nicer. The empty rectangular hole on the chassis will have the Clarity MR parallel feed cap mounted into it.

Purple and gold... how could I forget the other half of the color scheme. ;)
