DIY My Altec Duplex Journey

Being as there has been some interest expressed in the Altec Duplex line of drivers, I figured now would be a good time to share my experience with these drivers.

A few years back, I came across a pair of Altec Model 19 speakers on the local craigslist at a price that was about half what I was used to seeing them at, so I picked them up and spent quite a bit of time sanding them down, building new crossovers, etc. Once they were complete, they became my main speakers and I enjoyed them for several years but there was one little thing that I could never get over with them. Although my listening space is pretty big, I found that I had to sit WAY back from them, like 14+ feet away in order for them to sound like a system rather than two different drivers doing two different things.

I did some reading online and found that I wasn't the only person to experience this phenomenon and that alot of people that had enjoyed the Model 19 but didn't have the space in their listening area to set them up correctly had moved along to the Duplex line which incorporates similar drivers as the Model 19 but in a Point Source presentation with the horn originating from the center of the woofer cone.

Not long after that I saw a set of Altec 605B duplex drivers for sale locally without cabinets for a decent price so I took the plunge. Now, this was in late spring and I was dying to hear these, which meant that I had the pleasure of building cabinets for them over the summer where the temps here in the Phoenix are were hovering around 110 degrees.

I decided to build the cabinets based off this build which even included a cut sheet detailing how to rip the plywood!

The cabinet is a slightly modified Altec 620 cabinet, which many have had success with over the years. Here are some photos of the initial cabinet build.

Once the cabinets were put together, the next item that needed addresing was crossovers. Although the drivers came with crossovers, they were pretty much falling apart and didn't sound very good to my ears so I decided to look into building some new networks for them. One network in particular that I had read alot about was the Markwart crossover network:

I put together some networks based off the 605A/B Phase Correct Crossover with MF EQ network from Markwart's website using Kimber Kaps, Jantzen Air Core inductors, Mills Resistors and twisted pairs of CAT 5 cable for wiring (which was recommended to me by Billfort).

Next up was to install the dampening into the cabinets (fibergalss insulation), mount the drivers onto the baffles, connect the crossovers and seal everything up.

There was one other step, which was to build grilles to protect the drivers from my kids curious fingers and projectile toys.

With these all put together, I listened to them through my Bottlehead Stereomour 2A3 integrated amplifier and was really quite impressed with what I was hearing. The sound-stage that these drivers produce when driven by a DHT SET(Directly Heated Triode, Single Ended Triode) amplifier was really quite magnificent and even spooky in its realism. It didn't take long to see what "all the fuss is about" with Duplex drivers. I lived with these as my main speakers for a couple of years quite happily but the only thing is, I was noticing a disconnect in the lower mid-range / upper bass and they were a little soft on top compared to the Altec Model 19's.

I figured out that what I was hearing in the mid-range / bass was actually being caused by the cabinets being over damped. When I was putting these together, I never even considered that it was possible to put too much dampening material inside.

Another thing was, there wasn't much info online about the 605 drivers compared to the 604 drivers. After a while it got me to thinking that someday, maybe I should look into swapping out the 605B's for 604's.

Not long ago, I did just that after getting a good deal on a pair of 604-8G drivers. While I was at it, I fixed the cabinet dampening issue and re-veneered the cabinets in Red Oak veneer. I'm not sure if it is obvious in the photos, but when I assembled the cabinets I made a rookie mistake in not orienting the grain pattern on top to match the side. Using the cutlist that was provided resulted in the grain running front to back on top rather than side to side. Now the grain pattern wraps around from top to sides and looks much more professional.

Here they are after the re-veneer and two coats of Danish oil:

Here is a photo showing the difference between the 605B and 604-8G drivers.

New drivers means new crossovers of course. I stuck with a Markwart design for the 604-8G's using the "Simplified 604-8h EQ Crossover" (which can be tailored to the 604-8G as noted): http://home.earthlink.net/~jmarkwart/id11.html This time however, I decided to go with Copper Foil Air Inductors and ditched the boutique caps for some NOS GE Motor Run capacitors (yes, the same kind used in air conditioners), again, based off the advice of Billfort. Everything is now wired up with Neotech 18g solid core UPOCC teflon coated wiring, basically a little bit larger gauge than the original CAT 5 used but still solid core wire and teflon.

Holy crap, that is a killer crossover!!!! I really miss my SET stuff, little magic left the house when I sold the Stereomour and Paramounts off......I must revisit that some day once I have more time!!

So, once I got these all together, I started to think that they really didn't look "finished". I have always liked the thick woven grill cloth that Klipsch uses on their Heritage speakers and since these are mine, I decided to break a little from Altec tradition and use the Klipsch grill cloth. Now, just so folks don't get confused as to whats in the box, I found a set of replica brass Altec badges on ebay that I think cap these off quite nicely.

Thanks fellas. So now that I've posted up details about how they were built, the next chapter in this thread will be listening impressions, which I will be posting once I get back from out of town.

Is it next chapter time yet? :)

Sadly, at this time everything is in boxes and won't be set back up till late next month. Also, there is another issue that has kept me quiet.

I've held off on posting any impressions as apart from changing the 605b drivers to the 604-8G drivers I also moved my system to a different room in the house. The room change was VERY significant, in fact, the new room sounded MUCH worse than the first. After placing absorption panels at all first reflection points as well as two floor to ceiling bass traps, it still doesn't sound as good.

The good thing is I still had the 605b drivers in the cabinets, even up until I installed the last room treatments so I can tell that there is a difference between the two drivers, with the edge going to the 604-8G in treble extension and balance from top to bottom. With that said, considering how badly this room still handicaps the performance of any system in it, I have decided to wait until I get setup in a new space to post any sort of review.

Sorry Mark, I know you're really looking for feedback before pulling the trigger on those GPA 604's.

I can relate on having a room handicapping a stereo. The only thing I haven't tried is to set up the room at a diagonal... which isn't appealing to me at all.

Your cabinets came out beautiful, Anthony! I look forward to reading your critical assessment. I think you'll be very happy. (Of course I'm very biased) ;)

It might be worth playing not only with absorption but also with diffusion. It seems everyone is only focused on absorption everywhere I look. I believe diffusion is equally as important
