Hi all, I’m fairly new to this forum but here to share my newest and maybe final pair of speakers in my 6yr journey of re building my system.
My story is very long but I’ll keep this as short as I can. I started about 6yrs ago with wanted to rebuild a system I had prior to a divorce in 05 , I started with some Vandersteen 2ce signature ii’s and loved the Vandersteen sound signature, you have to take great care in setup and they love a lot of current but I had that taken care of.
I then moved on to a pair of Vandersteen 3a Signature’s and they were quite a step up from the 2ce signature’s. I then came across a pair of speakers I had let slip through my hands years ago and had a chance to get them so I did, the Dali Helions. They are a beautiful looking speakers and had the wood I wanted on a pair of speakers with excellent midrange and highs, but lacking a bit in the low end. Now I had the low end taken care of due to me having a JTR S1 sub that a fiend of mine tuned to my room with my speakers, but I don’t listen with the sun all the time so was a bit of a problem.
Then out of the blue a pair of speakers I had seen awhile back that were out of my price range but being sold used were obtainable now. They are the Talon Khorus X , they have real solid wood (African Mahogany) no veneer, but lined with some material they use in the aerospace industry and to eliminate any resonance. The frequency range is very impressive (to me ) at 17hz to 36khz . Power requirements are 1-1000wpc , dimensions are 46in H 18 W at the base 8in W top 21in deep , 190lbs each.
They’re an usual speaker with their obelisk shape and speaker array, what looks like a theater , midrange and woofer is actually a super tweeter , tweeter , midrang/mid bass and behind that 10in custom driver is another 10in woofer in an isobaric configuration. The drivers are an Audax Titanium super tweeter, Scanspeak custom tweeter and custom mid/bass drivers from Eminence.
My Khorus’s have been upgraded to the highest Talon offered with the crossover built to the hilt with high end parts , all cabling inside is with Kimber cables.
The sound is something that needs to be experienced as they are up there with the best speakers I have heard in their clarity, bass (which is unbelievable) and while not the last word in tweeter extension they are very very close. Widest soundstage I have had in my room , deepest and controlled bass from a set of speakers I have owned (they destroyed the Revel Salons I owned before my divorce).
With that said I am absolutely satisfied with the Khorus’s, the people who owned them have had mixed results with them and it’s almost certain they were judging the Khorus’s before they were broken in which at the time were an astounding 500hrs with some saying they didn’t have a change until 1000hrs. But once run in I tell you these things are on another level and I may just be done (yeah I know we’re never done) . I may change your gear but I don’t see myself letting these go anytime soon.
