Naim Grounded Grid preamp.

Ok, I did say a while ago that Bruce's Grounded Grid was all I needed in a preamp. However the casework is big and a bit industrial looking and I wanted something a bit sleeker, something a bit more pleasing on the eye. Now I've always liked the look of the Naim shoebox stuff. Understated and tidy looking, almost discreet. I just happened to have an old chrome bumper 42 lying around which was given to me many years ago by an old friend. I never liked it but didn't have the heart to butcher it but yesterday I though what the hell and stripped out the old circuit board and built a hard wired Grounded Grid in its place. I have another case for the power supply and I've made up an umbilical using an old octal plug and socket. Hopefully I'll have it up and running in a few days.

Damn! That's awesome!

If you could fit your HV power supply into a SNAPS chassis, you could really mess with flat-earthers. :)

Ha ha, thank you! I have another shoe box case for the psu. I also built my valve phono stage into a pair of Naim shoe boxes. Works very well. I might post that too one day.

Not much to see but I sorted out the grounding this evening. Bruce doesn't connect the ground buss direct to the chassis but runs it though a ten ohm resistor. Safety earth is direct to chassis. That resistor is just enough to prevent a hum loop. The GG is a very quiet preamp and I think that's one of the things that draws me to it. I'm keeping my fingers crossed that this two box preamp will be quiet too! You can just see that ten ohm resistor in the top left hand corner.

KOA-Speer SPR carbon films. I approve.

Yes those Kiwamis are rather nice. I’ve used them in solid state builds as well and to my ears they lack that sometimes shouty quality you get with some metal films.
