Need smaller speakers- where to go, what to do?

I'm so relieved, for a minute I thought I was going to have to get a new hobby.

Now I just need about 70' of decent wire in a white jacket so I can move the amps to the other side of the room.
Ok, my approach on speaker cables would be quite labour intensive if you need some 20 meters. I posted the raw concept in this thread. If you're interested to learn more, I'll be happy to answer.

I could maybe get into that for what will eventually live in the original room that was the focus of this thread.. I more humble setup with shorter runs. This is going to require something pretty discrete as I have to wind it 1/2 way around a room and can't go under the floor or through the walls. So I'm either tacking it to the walls and over a big opening, or covering it with some sort of wire hiding track. I've never owned a place before, this is the first time I've really cared this much about appearances - but I made the decision that I don't want to compromise how the place looks for minimal sonic gain.

Congratulations on a fine choice. I wish I could hear this setup, my friend. It must be sublime.
Thank you. So far it doesn't exactly sound sublime, but I can hear enough promise in it to know that I can work with it. I was quite surprised how poor the Luxman sounded on these speakers, as its sounded excellent on other speakers I've had it hooked up to. The AVC passive pre is really the special sauce in my get up, I think.

I made the same decision a few years ago. Moved all the equipment except the speakers behind the listening position so now the only stereo thing visible are some small monitors. Does it sound 100% as good as when I could easily futz with cables/amps/etc? Nope. But it's a good compromise. And no, this is not a WAF issue; wife doesn't care, I do.

I also went through the same turmoil when we moved into our current house. My speakers are gigantic and they stayed, but the gear is tucked away around a corner when it's unobtrusive. I also ended up with about 120 feet of speaker wire. I think when I update my rack, I may move all the amps into the basement since they're turned on remotely anyway.

I have gotten comments like that, "I don't have a wife around so don't have to worry about aesthetics" but...this is all on me. Well, me, and I know my wife would rather things be a certain way even if she's encouraged me to do whatever I want. I'm a happier listener when I like what my room looks like. My stress/anxiety doesn't dig messes or clutter.

I remember vaguely what your place looked like... great bones for minimalism!

One of my favorite designs aesthetically are the Design Acoustics PS-10. Not a bad sounding speaker either. To this day I have a hard time passing by any pair I come across. 7BFB53DB-EED7-470C-9361-92F76B6AC68C.jpeg

There used to be a record store that I'd go to occasionally that had them. I wish that store was still around, as I've moved to what would be about a block from them. They always sounded nice in the store, as did a pair of the awesome looking Design Acoustics D12 hexagon-ball speakers I heard in a record store in Portland once.

Hmm... I'm looking for a pair of vintage speakers for my office (the sunroom in the this thread, no more audiophile pretensions for this room. Maybe a pair of those PS10s... though I was thinking of Dynaco A25s as I miss the pair I used to have.

Yeah I remember that place in Evanston. The those PS-10 sounded very good up there on the top of some shelves (way up and out of the way)

Sorry to nag, just curious if you tried the Lux as a pre? Sorry if you answered and I missed it.

It was called "2nd Hand Tunes" and closed in 2013. I used to come up here in the late 2000s because the Salvation Army had the least picked-over stash of potential silver face receivers and random vintage box speakers in the area. I'd always find something. After that I'd hit the old news stand (still there) and 2nd Hand Tunes. The "Vintage Vinyl" store was too expensive- but the market has now caught up to his prices.

One of the PS-10s is in the background in this screengrab from a video about the store.

That location is now a "Float center" so come on down if you're into sensory deprivation?

I haven't. The Slagleformer pre has so embarrassed every other preamp I have ever tried that I just don't bother anymore (but I admit to having considered it right after I took everything apart).

For speaker wire, a few industry insiders (straight from the mouths of Palcovich, Vandersteen, Thiel) had turned me on to Jenving Supra wire. It’s not their most expensive- it’s actually their standard wire- but it works great and is quality stuff. Tin plated copper.

A thought on that wire- I have made headphone cables and dressed them in paracord (removing the center cord and leaving the colored outside sleeve)- some paracord can be bought in larger sizing and can look quite nifty.

Here’s some “dressed up” power cords done in cloth or paracord weave. Gives you the idea of what you can do if you feel fancy….6D4F93B3-6282-44CA-84D6-5185A3547AAF.jpegBBDE6AA5-24B0-4AA6-8285-8C00B26ACB1B.jpeg

This might fail your attempt at making your speakers inconspicuous and visually transparent in the room, but it’s a neat way to dress up wire if your sensibilities fancy it.
