Nelson Pass Aleph J

Yes, absolutely.

As an aside: I am continually impressed by Nelson Pass's designs, his philosophy, and his willingness to share much of his output with the DIY community.

I can't say I'd want to build one but if it's anything like my Aleph 30, you're all in for a treat. One of the most non-amp-sounding amps around.

The Aleph J is a direct descendant of the model 3 and 30. http://www.firstwatt.com/alephj.html

Then yes, I can highly recommend that, if you have the skills, go for it. The Aleph 30 is simply an outstanding amplifier. I have used it with a variety of speakers but what it really really loved was my Quad 63 pros. It is natural sounding, full, coherent, can carry a tune and drop it off where you want and then come back for more. Hmm, maybe I should dig it out of the basement. I've not had room for the Quads but it also sounded good with my Harbeths.

Go for it!

Nelson Pass helps to give transistors a good name...

This is a very good choice of amplifier kit, for medium-efficiency speaker users.

Notice point number 5, in his write up " 15 dB less negative feedback ".

On a high efficiency speaker system, 98 dB and higher, which is well set up, well wired, and fed by a good source, a person with normal hearing can hear the difference between a low negative feedback amp, ( with any small amount of negative voltage feedback, like this Pass amp you are discussing ), and a ZERO negative feedback amp.

The problem with 99% of the zero feedback vacuum tube SET amps people use ( on their efficient 98 dB and above speakers ), is that the tube amps used are simply not high enough in overall performance.. The Pass amp will possibly best them, despite voltage or current feedback in the Pass kit amp.

Now, if you have MEDIUM efficiency speakers, this PASS amp kit may very well be ideal for you !!

Have fun, I do.

I'll build the Aleph J. It will be a bit before I start it. Have to finish the ACA first. :)

opa1 , just out of curiosity, what is the total parts cost for the Aleph J? And how many hours will it take to build? I've always been interested in Class A and in Pass Labs in particular.

Ever since selling my F5 ive been contemplating another Pass Class A build...

I really need to read up on this one. Curious how it compares to an F6.

Now you can understand why I never sell anything anymore. ;)

Would anyone be interested in a build thread of the Aleph J? I'm thinking about this a lot lately. Class A at 25watts.

YES. I would definitely want to build this. I'm going to pass on future tube projects and I've done a ton of new amp point to point and board refurbs so this should be easy.
