New Streamer!

So for about 6 months or so I’ve been pondering selling my Oppo UDP-203 and simplify things with a stand alone streamer. Recently an opportunity came along where someone just happened to be looking for a 203 so I sold it to them and thus began the search for a worthy streamer that would hopefully consolidate and sonically sound as good or better if possible.

If anyone has looked for streamers there are no shortage of selections and price range. I wanted something that would do everything yet be high end with good internal parts and build quality and I came to realize that is in about the $1k and above range. I did my research and was almost going to by a Roon streamer which made sense being that I use Roon but as I was about to pull the plug I came across a streamer I had never heard of yet had positive reviews, it checked all my boxes and then some.

The streamer is a Zidoo Neo S and is basically the Swiss Army knife of high end streamers, it retails for $1500 but I was able to get one for less than that. I received it about a week ago and upon first opening I noticed how well packed it was and the presentation fell in place with a high end piece of equipment as it was wrapped in a nice silk bag. Whek I pulled it out of the bag I was surprised at the size and heft of it, I was not expecting it, the build is very solid. I got everything hooked up and started setup, I was literally up and running within 5min and even though it was not settled in yet I immediately noticed how wide and spacious the presentation was while maintaining absolute detail and clarity without being analytical. I’ve had it about a week and this streamer not only does everything and is seamless but it sounds much better than my oppo, incredible that it’s that much better.

It has a 5in Oled screen that has all the bells and whistles, screen savers that can be VU Meters as well as custom portraits if you wish. Songs are displayed with album art but rate they’re playing at and time of song. This streamer is an absolutely solid performer and surpasses my Oppo by a wide margin sonically, in fact listening to the Neo S I believe the Oppo was the bottleneck on my digital side as the sound is refined and effortless in comparison.

Well that’s all I’ve got, I just wanted to share my new toy and give a mini review. If anyone is looking for a high end do it all streamer this one is highly recommended.

One of those would look great in my office.

Thanks for sharing your thoughts
It’s a very nice looking unit in person Imo that is very well made which I was a bit stunned to discover, thick aluminum on all sides.

By Roon streamer, you mean their Nucleus?

Thats more than just a streamer, thats a multi-input DAC (USB, coax, optical, AES/EBU), with an onboard/integral SSD storage device... aka a server, and also a player (analog outputs).

Being you are a Roon user and thus already have a Roon Core server instance running, are you using this new unit as a Roon Ready endpoint, or are you using the Zidoo control point app to control everything?

Yes it does just about everything hence the Swiss Army knife reference lol. I use it as a Roon endpoint and I have my own Dac connected. I have used its internal Dac and it is excellent and would definitely be fine should my Dac go in for servicing. I have used the Zidoo app , it’s not too bad not the best by any means but not hard to navigate as it has everything that you can do on the devices interface so that’s a plus in my book.

Fascinating device at a reasonable price. Also running Roon. How is this connected? Is it Roon ready and just hung on the network or do you need a bridge device and have this as a DAC off it. Following, quite a nice package with lots of features.

Interesting. I've been kinda looking at the Eversolo DMP-A6 streamer and it seems to be the same company as your Zidoo.

I want a new all-in-one streaming DAC for my tube/altec rig and the Eversolo or IFI Neo Stream are a the top of my list.

Steve Huff (SteveHuffPhoto.com) has reviewed both and in a reply to a question I asked him on the Eversolo page he said he would take it over the IfI all day cause of the interface speed etc... but my only hang up is that it uses the same Dual ESS Saber 9038Q2M chips that my current (in that rig) Topping D50S does. I know there is more to DACs than just the chips on the board... but it's a weird mental hangup.

Your positive review of this Zidoo makes me kinda tilt back to the Eversolo vs. the Ifi.

Did you get yours from a dealer and is there deals to be had out there on them? I can get the ifi for $250 off because my sister-in-law works for ListenUp out of Colorado so I can get a little friends and family hookup there. Really trying to keep whatever solution to ~ $1000-1200.

It is Roon ready and you can stream directly from it I.E. Tidal connect , Spotify etc etc. I use Roon and use it as my Roon endpoint. The Dac it has is very capable and sounds excellent although I use my external Dac. All around this is an exceptional player.

@Audiofreak71 , everything you need in a streamer and nothing you dont. The OLED screen looks like the perfect size, just right. Very elegant lines with hints of classic design. Well done and congratulations!

I highly considered the A6 it is made by Zidoo so you are correct, the one reason I did not but it over the Neo S is because it was not sure when they would bring it to the states and also if the price was going to be $850 here in the states or not and now I’m hearing it will be $960 and was sold out within 20min on Amazon.

I’m happy with the decision I made as the Neo S is an absolute tank of a steamer and performs flawlessly. As far as deals I am sure you can find them on the Neo S , I had a coupon and credit from Amazon and got a big discount on it, but tbh this streamer is well worth its retail price and is a bargain even at that.

Well I just ordered the Eversolo DMP-A6 Master Edition from Aamir at Summit Hifi. I had talked to him in the past cause of all the NuPrime gear I've owned which he is the distributor for. He will have a small allotment coming in mid-June... so I just jumped on one. Since I plan on using the internal DAC, I decided to just avoid the neurosis of WHAT IF IT'S BETTER, and just go for it. He agreed that the improvments from the upgraded clocks and opamps directly relates to the the DAC section and is worth it. If someone is just using it as a streamer only, the base A6 is fine. $1299 delivered on the Master.

I did find out that the HDMI output is not i2s which means I probably won't try it with the Audio Mirror... I'll stick to my NuPrime Stream-9 as the source for that.

Demand for these things is through the roof, so while he didn't give me a deal per se, he doesn't charge sales tax (unlike amazon) and free shipping is included. I'm happy with that.

Will report back when it arrives in a few weeks. Assuming no delays.

Awesome, will be interesting to hearing your thoughts on it Although I’m sure it will be an excellent streamer. Both the A6 and Neo S are very similar as far as the parts used, linear power supplies , Nichon and Wima caps, Sabre Dacs etc so I’m sure you’ll be happy.

I think so. I like how active the company is in putting out firmware updates and listening to their customers. There is a massive (and fast moving) thread on ASR about it and one of the guys from the company is contributing. The reviews of the software are glowing. Seems like it's poised to unseat BlueOS as the most user friendly et. al. native streamer software.

Agreed , extremely good updates and customer service. I had some issues navigating some things so I emailed the company and I received a same day response and resolve for my issue, incredible customer service so I’m very happy about that. Yeah at these prices for what you’re getting for these I’m sure they will unseat the blueOs. These players are at the level of the $3k to $5k players at an insanely lower price, I was skeptical at first but proof is In ownership and they live up to the hype.
