"No charge for lousy sunsets"

Long, long ago, I had a favorite restaurant in the Maryland seaside resort of Ocean City. Ocean City is located on a barrier island, so it has water on two sides (actually, three sides -- there's an inlet between Ocean City and Assateague Island cut by a hurricane in, IIRC, 1938).

But I digress.

The restaurant, Fager's Island, was (and perhaps still is?!) located on the "Bay side" of the island, so it had an overwater view to the West.
On a wall in the dining room, there was a sign that always made me smile, saying:

No charge for lousy sunsets

The corollary being, of course, that a site like that has few if any "lousy sunsets" -- they're all amazing.

Fast forward three or four decades.

My wife and I are blessed to now live in a place that evokes Fager's Island's tongue-in-cheek promise... and I love trying to take photos of sunsets.
So I am going to subject you to some :-)

Sorry that some photos are distorted by being taken through the porch screen (I am also effing lazy!).

Perhaps the photos also give some sense of how much the sun "moves" to the north in the summer here relative to the winter -- we have LONG summer days and SHORT winter ones in Northern New England!

I dig the pic's. Really like the last one. That's a large size home you have! :)

Nice shots. Gotta love a sunset! Are we collecting sunset pics in this thread? I can tell you that I have a whole lot more sunset pics than sunrises....

Sunsets have special meaning to me. For the four years I was in college in Daytona Beach the flat landscape and tall pine trees that dominated the flora denied me a clear view of the Western sky. I didn't realize how much I was missing that until my first summer back home in Texas where the rolling terrain and big sky collaborated in brewin up many majestic sunsets for my viewing pleasure. For the next three years I developed a sort if grudge against the Sunshine State for the single reason that it denied me this pleasure. I've stopped and appreciated every noteworthy sunset I see ever since. Thanks for the great pics, Mark.

That's the magic of a wide angle lens :-P It's a pretty ordinary sized Colonial (actually, kind of small by early 21st Century standards); it's actually a bit smaller than our old house in MA. I think this one is about 2500 ft^2 all in (including the loft hifi room). Lotsa 4000 - 5000 square footers in the Boston Metro Area these days... :-P

Sunsets and sunrises are never the same and always breath taking.

Our view to the East is blocked by trees and the uphill side of the hill on which we live, so not much in the way of sunrises here.

I think that would be a good use of this thread ;-)
Sunrises are on topic, too, for those with a view to the East...

I guess I can play now that the sunrise has been allowed. these are posted in another thread but heck I'm learning more about the board software and am going to try to slap em in this thread, too.

Some of the most magical and breathtaking sunrises are from atop Haleakala Volcano on Maui. You're looking down, above the clouds as it rises.

Our Sun

One of my best friends, Ralph works with NASA on a number of solar platforms/programs. The stuff he has shown me in his lab is mind-blowing. YouTube down sampled the video quality, but it's still fascinating.
