Hi all,
I'm in the process of a massive reduction of stuff, much of which was intended for projects that will never happen (for me, at least!) due to some fine motor control issues in my hands. Coming over the next few days will be a few tonearms, many great MM and MI cartridges, and a number of unused speaker parts. But on to the first!
This is a Grado Lab Series arm that Greg Metz from STS Turntables completely restored for me. It was part of a really enjoyable full renovation of a Thorens TD 124 from the first month of production that I scored a couple of years ago from my 99-year old father. I wanted a series of arms and cartridges for it that would demonstrate the sound of the era, so this one was fitted with a Shure M7D, and mounted on an original Thorens arm board, complete with the age appropriate patina. The arm has been completely rewired and includes the full run of phono cable. The counterweight tap on the arm wand - a notoriously challenging weak point in the original arms - has been reinforced with an internal epoxy sleeve. The wood is mahogany from Stanley in Germany. The cartridge is in fabulous condition, and it includes a new sled, 2 Grado weights and an unused Tonar replacement stylus. I'm also throwing in the wonderful Tracking Wizard Protractor.
For those interested in the turntable and arm restoration story, it's posted on WBF under the title "The Fun Never Ends..." Sadly due to my hands, it seems the fun does end at some point.
I'm selling the entire package for $750, much less than the cost and the restoration. I'd like to keep the arm and cartridge together, since they are very happy as a couple. But we can talk...I'm open to reasonable offers.
I love this combo, but I just don't listen to it much, and as much as I love the idea of multiple arm boards, arms and cartridges for the TD 124, I find that I don't change them out as often as I thought I would. So this one - visually my fave and a really top-notch performer - is the first to need a new loving home. The arm will be very well packed, and will use the arm board as part of the stabilization of the arm against shipping damage. You can use it or sell it...(it's really beautiful).
This is the first item I've listed here on what is now my favorite audio site, so for those who don't know me or are reticent to make a deal with a newbie, please see my feedback on Audiogon for assurance that I will deliver on my promises. My user name is ryoung. I'm located in New York City, for anyone who might like to pick the arm up in-person and save on shipping cost.
