Doing some urban renewal on the ol' Frankenaltecs today -- I've had my dump find JBL 275 drivers/H5040 horns on line for the past week or so, just for fun (mostly). While the EMILARs were off line, I took the liberty of touch-up painting the patches of bare metal on them (and they do look better, IMO & FWIW).

Today, I put the EMILARs back. As long as I was doing anything, I also decided to install the nice pair of Altec 802D drivers I have (which I got from DNewma04 at AK, by the way and if memory serves) on 'em -- taking advantage of the gen-u-ine 1" to 2" EMILAR throat adaptors I picked up sometime last year from Jammin' Jersey (which, rather ironically, is in Southern California).

As long at the 2441s were loose, I thought it would be fun and even sort of worthwhile to snap a few pictures -- just an opportunity to compare the beefy 1" throat JBL 275 driver with the profoundly beefier 2" throat JBL 2441 driver. In a coupla photos, I tossed in a 2A3 for a sense of scale (more interesting than a ruler -- especially with the chance that a rogue 2441 might decide to steamroll the poor, innocent 2A3!).

Herewith, photos -- strictly FYI & FWIW. :)

Things that go bump in the night.

2441s are round, and so are the Edgarhorns I paired them with. They woke me up one night after rolling off the top of the bass cabinets...

Didn't hurt 'em a bit, but it scared me silly. I had a toddler in the house who could've been smooshed like a bug by that thing!

You have a problem with rolling drivers, son -- if memory serves.
Seems to me that a certain Fostex supertweeter of my ken may have taken a similar tumble? ;)

Is it that darned New Madrid fault? :)

PS the mass of a single 2441 is -- disconcerting.

Upon hefting one, one might surmise that a 2441 is in fact a solid billet of -- some dense metal. Tung sten ('heavy stone') maybe.

I do believe that spacetime flexes just a wee bit in the vicinity of a 2441, in fact.

PPS I am sorry that the 2441s here are a little bit less than minty cosmetically -- but, hey, the price was right.

'twas but one incident in which two drivers fell, one upon the other... I believe the Fostex was a poor choice of "spotter" to the big ol' JBL! It was tethered to the brute and was an unwilling participant in the whole escapade, I'm sure.
