The Monkees were so unfairly maligned. Half the music from that era was recorded by session musicians, playing songs written by other people. The Monkees just did it out in the open.
and, slowly but surely, they (the Prefab Four, that is) extricated themselves and made their own rekkids.

my apologies for the digression -- saw this photo -- KLH compact hifi, T-antenna and all and had to share it.
I espy the first CSN albim down there on the floor -- not sure about any of the others offhand.
He cowrote Head, didn't he?

Now I'll have porpoise song stuck in my head all week. Which is just fine.
