FS Redboy SUTs

For Sale
Hi...

I have recently purchased a SPU Royal GM MKII....which will be going into Luxman 590AXII....I currently have one of your RCA MI12399 SUT at 1:14....it sounds good but has been bested imo by a Cinemag Red 3440a at 1:16 but not by much...a bit more open sounding etc....I think that possibly we can do better...
What would you suggest?...

Thanks!

Hi Redboy-
I'm looking for a nice SUT for use with a 103 or made even an AT 33 series... Don't want to spend a fortune. Maybe something like a McGowan or Altec 4722, UTC, Lundahl nickel. Got anything like those for sale?

Thanks-

Hi Harry! I might have something to fit the bill. I’ll message you today.

Nate

Nate, I believe you are gearing up for more SUT builds. Spring 2022? I’d be interested in another one from you. A bit more gain than the 15095.
Ortofon MC10 Super, I have a couple. Also just got a Fritz Gyger FG 2 5/75um retip for my Pickering XLZ-7500.
I suppose you are still active on AK? I’ve been watching BT.

Hi @hogwylde09, it’s nice to see you here at the Haven!

Yep, I’m anxious to start building again, as soon as spring weather allows! I should have something to fit the bill if you can wait just a few… :-)

Nate

@Redboy. Couldn’t wait. Well, sort of. I did buy the Newcomb TR-91/TR-100 from your “other” listing site. Reason, a pair NIB TR-91 listed there also. If I understand correctly, these are somewhat rare? Maybe put another way. They don’t show up as often as other more common input mic transformers?
Maybe if you have a spare minute or few. You wouldn’t mind looking at the completed listings.
They should be most recent, in boxes.
Thanks Nate, hog..

Those Newcombs are nice transformers, and the pair in boxes looked great. They do seem to be less common than some of the Altec input transformers, but it seems to me that vintage input transformers in general are getting harder to find.

Your next challenge will be to find the appropriate sockets for those nine pin bases...

I wonder if one could just solder some flying leads right to the pins and not deal with 9-pin sockets? There are also small bullet connectors available for quad copters and the like that might work as well. A search for 2.3mm bullet connectors turns up a lot of options.

Nate, these 9 pin Amphenol sockets aren't correct? eBay Item number

I’ve seen a few builds with wires soldered directly to the pins since sockets are hard to get. If I recall, the guys just used collars/clamps to mount inside a box, padded with something or other, and wired up.

I love the idea of the bullet connectors, though.

It seems I'm not getting the SQ from the Newcomb's I was expecting. The clarity of instruments, vocals, cymbals, everything seems crowded, less defined. Even with better cables I tend to get hum. Don't know exactly, but just not in the same league as Redboy's Altec 15095. I hope Nate will be able to offer some 4722 this Spring. Aware of the prices these are going for nowadays. Would be worth the cost, knowing how good the 15095's are. I would think the green transformers would be a cut above, with the benefit of some added gain.
What started this whole "more gain" thing was a cartridge with only .07mv output. I was only looking at it as the price seemed fair for an Ortofon. LOMC

I’m either going nuts or something is definitely changed. Might be these new input transformer needed more break in time. Now running on the high gain 36:1, Ortofon MC-10 Super. Still the Kenwood KD-500 and Grace 707. Running into phono inputs either Fisher 400 or HH Scott 299c.
Loosening up, it is. Clarity and separation of notes, cymbal strikes, guitars. Vocals. It’s all in and improving. Also hum is not quite as noticeable with an 1 meter interconnect built by a AK member. Canare L-2T2S & Rean NYS373. For $18.00, I think I came out ok.
