@Redboy after scrolling back thru some of the cool SUTs in this thread - i noticed the photos with the transformers pullled out of their sockets. on those socketed SUTs, can other transformers be directly subbed in? thanks

I get this question a lot, but the answer is "Not usually."

Of the "plug-in" transformers, some have 8 pins and fit a standard octal tube socket. But others have 9 pins and only work with an oddball socket meant for these transformers... they're quite difficult to source.

But even if you had two different "octal base" transformers, odds are good they wouldn't be interchangeable. There doesn't appear to have been a standard for pinouts on these things.

I may have said this earlier but my Redboy SUT is the only SUT I've ever had that didn't require care in placement to avoid hum/noise. Maybe that's unique to mine but its damn impressive. I can store it, shove it, squeeze it, or carefully place it anywhere and it works without a hitch.

This latest is likely a one-off -- I don't suppose I will come across these particular transformers again. If you like weird or unique things, this SUT might be for you!

Check 'em out, though. These appear to be UTC A-11s in a different case, spec'd for OEM use in an old audio amp. They're wired for ~1:15 gain and sound very nice, as you would expect... but I like these most for the cool patina. :)

I am curious, what’s what?
TRW (UTC) O-16. The “ouncers” weren’t particularly rare but these were NOS until I broke the seal. Wired ‘em up last night and they’re already off to a new home.

Utrad (early Triad) something or other. Also NOS. Stupid rare but totally unknown. These must have been a special order for some sort of military equipment because they’ve got amazing bandwidth. I really like how these sound.

Peerless 4611-8 are the best known of these three in hifi circles, and the most coveted by collectors. Very hard to find. WE heritage and Peerless construction… yep, they’re super nice.
