Mikey, On the bright side Success - I was able to rip my first SACD today "Keb' Mo's -Just Like You" in glorious surround. I chose ISO and dsf to the same USB hard drive folder and it created its own folder of the album for the dsf. Proceeded to open the files in FOOBAR2000 and saw they are in DSD64, fine with me. I'll just have to find out if my Oppo will play as a dsf or may need to convert to flac? When it got up to speed looked like it was transferring at about 3 mb/sec. Had to take the Sony and plug into my TV & network in another room and hope the IP didn't change when I moved it back, I guess it didn't.
Hope you're having a blast at your Super Bowl Party (I've got my own little Rippin' party goin' on over here!)
I'll be in touch, Thanks again, your the man!

HI Mikey,

I came across this thread earlier today, joined and now cannot wait to get ripping SACDs. I decided to try two old Sony's not listed by you as working first because I have them and if they do work it may be useful to others; they are a BDP-BX58 and a BDP-780 and both have M07.R.0631 firmware in them.

I've feed the appropriate scripts to each and they give identical results initial blinking on the flash drive for ~ 10 - 15 seconds, a burst of 4-5 rapid flashes followed by sustained slow blinking off and on. I've let it run for as long as a half hour to see if it would change - none.

The files are the downloaded Sony - Panasonic files. (AutoScript, AutoScript.TSS and sacd_extract_160). They are in elderly 4 & 8 GB USB 2.0 drives, formatted as fat32.
  • Create an empty AutoScript folder and put the three files in it.
  • Place all three files in the root directory.
Both structures give the same results.

Either these players do not work, I have the folder structure wrong or incorrect settings on the players.

I would appreciate some help identifying where the problem lies and how to correct. If the players are at issue, I will get one that's been tested.

Thanks,
-Steve

I've been trying to PM you back, but keep getting a message pop-up about restricted content? "Oops! We ran into some problems."

Hmmm, I have no idea what that was, never seen that before... however...

Rippety-Do-Dah! Apparently the prior PMs and a little additional thread cultivation by you were enough to achieve lift-off. Good show!

I'll just have to find out if my Oppo will play as a dsf or may need to convert to flac?

We can explore that in the DSD Playback Options thread, I have a feeling you can play the .dsf files from a thumb drive but I can't specifically test that as my Oppo is a BDP-103, and yours a UDP-205, so it could be different. Give it a shot, if they need to be converted to .flac that's not difficult.

Had to take the Sony and plug into my TV & network in another room and hope the IP didn't change when I moved it back, I guess it didn't.

Download and use the Fing app on either iOS or Android, it's an easy way to determine the IP address of any network connected device.

Hope you're having a blast at your Super Bowl Party

I did thank you, although my numbers in the office pool did not come in, and I'm certainly no Patriots fan.

I'll be in touch, Thanks again, your the man!

My pleasure, congrats on state-of-the-art ripping via SACDExtractGUI and Windows 7, you got it going in short order.

If the players are at issue, I will get one that's been tested.

Welcome to HFH!

Unfortunately it is the players at issue, they are tested as not working. While there is at least some small outside chance that someone will someday figure out a way to make them work, I think it's very unlikely.

With the list of working players relatively robust, there is little incentive for more in-depth testing. All bets are off if they lack the proper MediaTek CPU, and Sony makes it difficult to even determine that much as they wipe the markings from the chips they don't manufacture, so you can't even pull the lid and just look at what chipsets are in use, it's not that simple.

Even if they do use the correct CPU, there are still instances of machines in that category that do not work, due to differences in the Linux kernel they employed. Those are theoretically solvable instances, but those solutions are certainly well above my pay grade and involve in-depth Linux knowledge going back to kernel versions in use from 2011 and perhaps earlier.

For those reasons I doubt there will be a ton of additional breakthroughs on those currently non-compatible machines. Don't wait in vain for something that is unlikely to materialize, pick up a known compatible unit while they are still readily available now and get ripping!

Thanks Mikey - I understand and will get one of the tested ones.

-Steve

I think that is your best bet, to my knowledge the current testing is focused on newer units from 2013-2014 or so, as well as existing units that seem to employ the correct MediaTek CPU but for some reason still don't work, likely due to differences in the Linux kernel.

One such enigma is the S790, from the very same series of 2012 Sony players like the S390 and S590 that are known to work.

For some reason, the slightly higher-end S790 remains stubbornly incompatible although recent findings suggest it can be solved. So with that one there is hope in that it uses a seemingly compatible MediaTek CPU, but has Linux kernel differences that could possibly be sorted.

With the earlier units like the ones you have, it would appear all efforts to arrive at a solution have been abandoned, but not before significant time and effort was expended on them.

Good luck with the auctions, if it's any consolation you should be able to use the remote control handsets that you have now. So if you see a nice looking compatible example on eBay that lacks a remote, you can bid on it knowing one of your current remotes will work.

Hi Mikey,
..and many thanks for all your hard work in developing this routine. I've managed to install the program on my iMac (after converting that text file back to an executable after the Mac did it's silly thing). Installed the Autoscript into the root of a FAT32 formatted USB drive, which is read OK by my Oppo 103D. Drawer opens, disc in. Run the program, which "sees" the Oppo and tests fine. But then it keeps telling me it's "Done", but it doesn't do anything.

I've tried using two different USB drives, rebooting the Oppo etc., but with the same result. Any ideas please? Here's a screenshot -

Good morning (or afternoon/evening in the U.K.)!

Re-specify the path to sacd_extract (the one in the GUI package that you made executable) using the Browse button in the Program field.

You may then also need a fresh/clean reboot of the Blu-ray player (remove the thumb drive for that), noting any potential change to the assigned IP, then repeat the original rip process.

Welcome to HFH Tony!

Cheers,
Mike

Many thanks Mike. As it happens, I dug out my old PC laptop, installed the files, and ripped with no problem! All my SACDs now done.

That's great!

But for full clarity and the benefit of others reading this thread, please do check the setting I described and let us know if that does the trick for you on the Mac, no reason why that too should not be working.

Hi,

I've been struggling with my BDP-BX510 for a while and can't seem to get over the line. I feel like I'm almost there and am probably making a beginner's error.

I can get to sleep mode, ping, and pass the "Test" with SACDExtractGUI. But when I execute it reads "Response result non-zero or disc opened libsacdread: Can't open 10.0.00.23:2002 for reading". After the error I can redo the ping and test and still pass.

At the bottom is a screen clipping.

Here's the process:
1. remove the thumb drive
2. power the unit Off
3. unplug the power cord for a few seconds
4. plug in power cord
5. turn unit ON (pause while watching the front panel LED display go through the boot sequence - "WAIT")
6. insert USB thumb drive, observe it's LED "read" activity
7. watch disc drawer open, place disc in tray but don't close it (you should now remove the USB thumb drive)
8. Press Power OFF, disc tray closes automatically
9. wait while the front panel LED display flashes OFF
10. Execute rip in SACDExtractGUI

Well I'm at home right now, and I did not bring my Windows laptop with me from the office, so I can't recreate exactly what you have posted there. However I don't think the actual path to sacd_extract in the Program field looks right in your screen shot.

So it's the same answer as in Post #428, re-specify the path to sacd_extract using the Browse button in the Program field.

When I use the Test button in the Program field I get this on a Mac:

Path (1).jpg

In the above example, I've got the entire SACDExtractGUI folder in my Applications folder, so the program needs to be pointed at that location for the sacd_extract element, then the Test shows a different result than you are getting.

Again, I don't have my Windows machine with me but I do not recall and can't imagine it being any different on Windows.

Thanks for the quick response!

I went ahead and put in the full address and tried again. Unfortunately I got the same response. I hit the "Test" button for sacd_extract and it looks like it can access the exe. See below.

Try a full power cycle of the Blu-ray player (remove the USB thumb drive):
  1. shut down the player
  2. pull the power cord
  3. replace the power cord
  4. power up, pause for full boot sequence
  5. note any potential change to the assigned IP/adjust as necessary in GUI*
  6. insert thumb drive/repeat rip sequence
Also close the GUI on the computer and then reopen after the player reboots.

*Edit: Triple check the IP address, it is entered differently in your 1st screenshot compared to the 2nd screenshot!

Thanks again.

Followed the steps but same result. I think the IPs were effectively the same 10.0.00.23 vs 10.0.0.23. But I checked the network setting on the BDP and it read 10.0.0.23 so I used it. Also checked again after the full reboot.

Let me know if you have other ideas.

Ok then I don't think you are actually entering sleep mode then, the clue is in the part of the message "or disc opened". The machine appears to be giving feedback that the tray is open.

Double check in the Sony's on-screen displayed menu settings that Quick Start is in fact enabled (#4 below but it doesn't hurt to double check all of these):

1. Setup -> Audio Settings -> DSD Output Mode (Off)

2. Setup -> BD/DVD Viewing Settings -> BD Internet Connection (Do not allow)

3. Setup -> Music Settings -> Super Audio CD Playback Layer (SACD)

4. Setup -> System Settings -> Quick Start Mode (On)

Also ensure that your USB thumb drive looks exactly like this when viewed in Windows:

AutoScript-Win10.jpg

Ultra critical that there is actually an enclosing folder called AutoScript at the root level of the drive, and that there are no file extensions on the first and third files, only that 2nd (middle) file has an extension .TSS, the other two should not have any.

Thanks. I went through and checked the BDP setting everything matched. I took photos and can PM them to you.

Below is how things look on the USB. Pretty sure some of this is being loaded. When I was experimenting with different structures to get it to work, things definitely worked differently once I got to this structure (e.g., drive opened after inserting the USB key)

As for sleep mode. Also before I understood I needed to change the QuickStart mode - I couldn't ping the BDP after powering it down. Now I can ping & test it after powering down.

The firmware is M5.R.0255. Not sure if that has an impact.

Thanks again.

Late to the party, i always thought the ps3 and oppo machines were the only one that could rip, found your blog and purchased a sony bdps4100 on ebay for $40 came with remote, works perfectly following your instructions, just ripped Pink Floyd Wish You Were Here.
Wish you were here sound pretty good on my Home Cinema 5.1 system as well with the Sony.

Welcome to HFH, better late to the party than never!
Yes the U.K. market-specific S4100 is proving a very popular machine for reasonable prices, a nice SACD ripping station.
Cheers!
