Shearwater love!

I used to regularly haunt all of the audio stores in Hamilton and area. And there were lots in the 70s and 80s: Anderson Sound, Schneider Sound, Globe Audio, Westdale Audio and Ancaster Audio. I listened to countless systems in these shops and in friend's rooms. Only two times I heard a system reproduce music so realistically that I was gobsmacked. The first was a system of a friend's friend that I still consider to this day as the best I've ever heard (that'll be a future post). The second was at Analogue Emporium in Hamilton owned by the incomparable Matt Brazeau. His store was an old home in the east end and his main audio room was a 14' x 30' living room. I walked in while he was playing "Fever" by Elvis Presley on "Elvis is Back" vinyl. I stopped frozen in rapt awe. The speakers? Meadowlark Shearwaters. I had to have them. But I couldn't afford them. I could afford the Kestrel HRs (after a year of saving) so I bought them from Mike Oddie at Alternative Audio in Dundas. After three happy years Mike let me take home a used pair of Shearwaters to audition at home. After days of listening to both speakers I chose the Shearwater HRs and used the Kestrels as a trade in. 17 years later here I am still in awe of these amazing speakers. 20200509_162752.jpg
I cannot see me upgrading. They are that good!

Quintuple ditto, but I’d like to. But it may just pi$$ me off, be something i couldn’t forget and put me on the dreaded changeout-itis merry go round again. Not that there’s anything wrong with that (Jerry Seinfeld).

Totally agree. The urge to upgrade is a real thing that infects all of us audio-nuts. I am thrilled with my system right now and I am sure that you are thrilled with your system too. I'd rather discover new and challenging music!

The Shearwaters are truly fantastic speaker. Once I got them matched up to my Exposure mono blocks, I had a system that I could have been content with for ages.
I always was curious about running them side by side with Harbeth SHL5+s. Just for fun. Worst case scenario it would have been very close.
I still have my Shearwaters. They are awaiting the upcoming move, where they will once again be lovingly listened to.
Why aren’t they being listened to now? I started talking to @Pat McGinty and he took me down that whole new rabbit hole.
But I gotta say, once I had the Shearwaters well fed with quality sources and amps, that was the best system I had ever owned.

Out 0f curiosity, what electronics were driving the Shearwaters the first time you heard them?

Meadowlarks is a rare bird on my latitudes (Sweden) have only crossed my paths once and it was a pair of Kestrel 2 (a transmission line if i remember correctly?)

Indeed they are transmission lines. They pretty well all were built that way, in the previous iteration of Meadowlark. Very solid TL cabinetry, simple, first order crossovers and very high quality components.

I'm actually tempted to drag the old Shearwaters upstairs and give them a run in the main system. They are good enough to be worthy of it.

I remember when Matt had those Shearwaters hooked-up in his livingroom the first time I heard them. He was definitely powering them with a Beard P35 amplifier ( 6 X EL84 tubes per channel for 35 watts). The preamp may have been a Hovland HP100, and the turntable may well have been a Rega Planar 9, with the under-development Foundation Research V5 tubed phono preamp.
He was playing Patricia Barber's Cafe Blue.....I was hypnotized!!
The Shearwaters sounded fabulous....I went on to get a pair of the Hot Rod version myself....and the Beard amp and CA35 preamp.

Thanks for filling in some of the missing pieces in my post Golden Ears. I still love Patricia Barber to this day!

Very coincidental that this pops up just on the day that my Shearwaters get dragged up from the basement to get hooked up to the Graaf. Shearwaters and tubes are a lovely combo. First time in more then 2 years that they get to play in the big system again.
