As we have so many Altec junkies here I thought I might share this post from the Steve Hoffman forum.

Altec 604 168x + masterbuilt 620 cabinets [Chicago]

Was asking for $3,400 (I believe he is down to $2400 now)

These speakers look and sound as good as you're hoping. HIGHLY efficient.

Full 8 ohm load (GPA HF diaphragms), Jeff Markwart crossovers and a pair of GPA crossovers (one GPA has a broken trace, easily jumpered). Altec + Mantaray logos. In excellent condition.

Cabinets were constructed by a master cabinet builder named Dale from St. Charles IL. Oak braced, MDF walls. Internally fully covered with a black insulation that's comparable to what airplanes use in to insulate their cockpits. Cherry veneer with Tung oil finish, it's begun to saturate with UV and looks wonderful.

Nice brass binding posts.

Includes custom-made dollies with locking wheels.

Local pickup in Chicago. Not interested in separating the drivers and cabinets. These speakers are surprisingly easy to transport when you remove the woofers and load the cabinets separately. I was able to transport both cabinets in a Toyota Rav 4. (Tight but it fits).

If you don't have 50 posts at SHF you won't be able to access this link https://forums.stevehoffman.tv/threads/altec-604-168x-masterbuilt-620-cabinets-chicago.1126337/

this is a cool guy on AK. he is a minister of some kind and had threads about these speakers and some other top flight gear.

I did not know that...https://audiokarma.org/forums/index.php?threads/help-asilker-perfect-his-altec-604s.778266/

Ughhh … in my general vicinity. And this forum has gotten me seriously thinking about tasting the Altec koolaid 😬

He is looking for newer smaller monitors.

This is from one of his last posts.

Dropping to $2400! we moved and my listening space is almost nearfield, I am looking for smaller-than-altec monitors like:
B&W 801 or 802 (s2 or s3 preferred)
Harbet / Rogers
KEF ls50
Snell E
PSB Synchrony (would love to try the Ones)
SEAS Thor

Same guy I got George's 2A3 amp from. Good seller. Has had these up for sale for close to a year. Offered to buy the cabinets and he wouldn't separate. Still have a pair of 604-8K's looking for some cabinets, or they they would go back in the 620's and the GPA's would go in these.. Oh well.

Hey all, I just made an account here today, these are my speakers. Mr. PM and other mods please pardon me as my first post is related to a sale. I do intend to contribute otherwise

Thanks for all the kind words, folks. It's been a pleasure meeting everyone and interacting

This weekend I commented that the only room in our house that's reasonably symmetrical is the dining room, and she said "well why don't you use it for your hifi stuff". Cool lady. So when the floors get sanded I'll be looking for some new monitors

No worries!
You didn't come here to advertise. Just to add to an existing discussion. And we aren't that anal about rules around here anyway.
So put your feet up, relax and make yourself at home.
And yeah, I wish life was at a place that would allow me to snag those lovely speakers. Though I doubt they would fit in the back of my Mustang...

Have you tried the front

And thanks for the warm welcome!

Welcome asilker. Beautiful cabinets! Like a scaled up Electro-Voice Interface D, which I always thought would be a great way of putting these amazing drivers in their best light - wide baffle, driver center at ear height and good looks with that strip of veneered wood at the bottom to break up the huge baffle. Love the clean look here.

I ultimately did something a little different to up the wood-to-grill cloth ratio but these look fantastic to me, and those drivers and cross-overs... If I didn't already have a pair!
