What did you get from your Secret Santa?

The coffee drinkers club thread.

Well I couldn't take it anymore and finally just now ordered myself a Technivorm Moccamaster KBGV in turqoise. This will replace my Oxo 8-Cup. Unfortunately I'll have to slum it and use my Bodum grinder till I can order a Baratza grinder in a month or so. Fingers crossed it's all that I hope it will be. A local friend has both the Moccamaster and Baratza and also happened to come from an Oxo 8-Cup and swears the Moccamaster/Baratza combo is a game changer for drip coffee. Can't wait!
I'm sure you will love it. Correct brewing temperature is the game changer.

I'm coming from the Oxo 9 cup, and I'm having much better luck with the Technivorm. Does your KBGV have the half-pot option? I use that most of the time as, well, I usually make just over a 1/2 pot of coffee. It slows the drip through the grounds a bit. I find that it makes the perfect 1/2 pot of coffee, consistently, every time. Another thing I really like is that the pot itself is very easy to clean. The Oxo 9 cup carafe had the smallest opening, and I had to use a sponge on a stick to get into it. Plus..I hated how the Oxo turned on and off, it was not intuitive, truly bizarre in how they complicated "on off" by trying to simplify it and make it 'cool, and I never used the programming, just another needless complication for me.

The Technivorm is basic and works great. Nothing extraneous. Plus it looks cool. Nice color choice!

Yes, I can do half pot, though I drink a lot so the full pot option is best for me. I also had the same cleaning issue with both Oxo products I had and used a sponge on a stick cleaning tool found in the baby food isle at the grocery store.

I like the simplicity of the Technivorm though I do have mixed feelings about all the plastic bits... which ideally should last a while but still, unboxing and seeing that the shower head is just a loose-ish press-on was a bit disappointing.

In the ten+ years it’s been since I’ve been to London, American style coffee culture has invaded and now there are coffee shops everywhere! Even parked under bridges. There’s still a prevalence of espresso-based drinks but finally I can get a decent drip or pour-over brew.

Looks great. Have you gotten a grinder yet to complement the Profitec?
I have a grinder, which I thought was a nice grinder, but it turns out it's not nice enough ( Doesn't grind fine enough) to complement the Profitec, so a buddy is sending me a more appropriate grinder.

Grinders are another deep well. There are some really good ones out there, but you can easily spend as much on the grinder as on the espresso machine.

Has anyone found a decaf that is also lower acid/lower elevation grown? Wife's stomach is sensitive and she can only drink decaf. I might have to get her a Keurig or something so I'm not so limited.

I'm far from a decaf expert but have some Illy decaf around here that I don't recall being very acidic. But I may be able to tolerate more than she can or I just might be more accustomed to it.

On advice received from this thread, my wife and I switched our subscribe and save order to Tim Horton’s from Koffee Kult after the latter almost doubled its price 6 months back. My daughter from NYC is visiting and things TH is too weak. I saw Olde Brooklyn Italian Roast on Amazon and was going to pull the trigger but figured I’d ask for advice here before doing so. Any phenomenal brands/blends I just have to try?

Chicago has a plethora of excellent coffee roasters. Dark Matter is a big one and a fave. Trying various blends/strains to see what fits your tastes is likely to produce better results for you than asking us what we like - our tastes may differ wildly. Have fun with your search!

Metropolis is also very good, though I agree on Dark Matter especially since Star Lounge, where they started, was my local coffeeshop for a long long time. My wife is friends with the owner and they're kind of saviors of the Chicago coffee-scene, having the guts to face off with the Intelligentsia Coffee Mafia and win. For a long time Intelligentsia was trying to strong-arm all the restaurants and coffee shops in Chicago into using their beans, and making coffee only their way (which is right-nasty and pretentiously overly serious). Star Lounge was like yeah whatever, we'll roast our own and do whatever we want and have fun and now their beans are everywhere in the city.

They're all a bit pricey, though, if you go with the local roasters...but the quality is top notch and both Metropolis and Dark Matter have beans for every taste. It's all so personal... I prefer a balanced medium roast and tend to not like African coffees (too floral/fruity).

Couldn’t resist a Black a Friday special on Lavazza, which is highly rated:

Also, I’m now spending most of my time in Colorado outside Denver.

I purchased this fully automatic machine at least 10 years ago and it is still going strong. it has been bulletproof all these years and makes a great cuppa. I wonder if the new ones are built as well?

Here in Europe the Jura automats are the best rated (and most expensive) machines. We never had an automat, but most likely it will be still a brilliant choice.

+1 on Dark Matter. My son is here fro Chicago this week and he brought me a bag of their espresso beans. Also Blue Bottle is quite good (I have a subscription).
