The Covid-19 thread.

It's hard sometimes not to interject in threads the circumstances surrounding our experiences with Covid-19. This is the actual name of the virus, so I prefer to use that. So I thought perhaps a thread of its own might be a good idea. I felt a little guilty posting my supermarket photo in the Darling Amp thread (only a little ).

I'll repost here. If memory serves, in one episode of M*A*S*H I think it was Hawkeye Pierce who said (while clutching toilet paper during a bugout) "When fear is near I want you here".




This is at our local Superstore, which for reference is like a massive Albertsons or Safeway, except not as nice and there's no booze. My second stop at Walmart had the same result. A staffer at Walmart confided "I heard Save-On-Foods got a delivery at 8 this morning". Off I went and scored the last 24 pack in the store there. Tales of Costco going thru skids of the stuff are making the rounds.

I think we're learning from the experiences overseas, and particularly Washington State. My wife and daughter have cancelled their weekend trip to Banff, which is as close to an international destination as we have here. That was something I encouraged. Besides, its bloody cold this weekend so outdoor activities would be limited. On a national level, our Prime Minister's wife tested positive for the virus, so federal funds won't be far behind.

I liken the onset of Covid-19 to a tsunami - there's footage out there (Phillipines ? Japan ?) which shows this low, kind of unimpressive wave approaching which hits the beach and just keeps coming and coming, taking cars and structures with it. It doesn't look much to start with, but the damage can end up being severe.

So there you go Havenites. Here's the place for discussing the event that is going to affect us all in one way or another.

My trip to Austin for SXSW was of course canceled, and now we've been asked to work from home for 3 days to allow for a deep cleaning of our offices, and to "stay tuned".

Something tells me it will be more than 3 days work from home.

Costco has evidently been out of toilet paper here for about a week, however each time I've been to the grocery store they had plenty on hand, the only item nowhere to be found are Clorox wipes. That's OK, I have both Clorox spray cleaner, and straight bleach, and I can fashion my own dang wipes.

This is a real threat whether directly or indirectly. If you are young, healthy and have a surplus of water, TP and food then you have nothing to worry about. For everyone else it’s not a bad idea to have a little extra of these items on hand (just please don’t hoard). My concern would be more contracting the virus and giving it to an older loved one that can be severely affected by it.
In my line of work we are at the front lines proactively treating facilities to keep it at bay. there are rumors of people traveling to Washington and other areas and potentially being infected but none confirmed yet.
Stay safe, sanitized and most importantly sane!

The school where I work is closed. I will report Tuesday for further orders. They collected the Clorox wipes and hand cleaner Monday. They said they needed it for the emergency locker. You cannot make this stuff up.

My kids will be completely out of school starting on Tuesday (they've been on remote / e-learning for the last week) due to a state-level closure. I've been working from home since 3/4 (thankfully I have a job which I can do from home), and my wife has not worked since she was diagnosed with MS. Because of my wife's illness, and the HSCT procedure she had in 2016 (which involves chemo) we have lots of experience with trying to maintain a sterile environment.

So far, we're doing OK, although I am very concerned about my parents and my mother-in-law who are at opposite ends of I-5 in Oregon. I was planning on visiting her tomorrow, but just found out one of my co-workers had been exposed to COVID on a business trip so I was 'once-removed' exposed.

I'm keeping a very positive outlook - working from home as usual, my wife who works from home was hired full time yesterday, and stocks are up. Beautiful rainy cold day here - and listening to mono Coltrane as I work.

My wife was skimming Facebook and somebody did some math related to all the TP purchases. Based on a 4 cases (or whatever the subject had in the cart that this was based on) a family of four in quarantine for 2 weeks would need about 182 defecations per day per person to use the supply of TP that was being purchased during that time. I'd say they have a little margin for error.

The client base are upper middle class to quite wealthy, people with international travel jobs in oil, high tech etc plus pilots, and retirement travelers.
I have to interact with them, accept their car keys and immediately climb in their car and park it .
Makes me a bit concerned. We are trying figure out the best methodes to reduce our risk.

If it’s a key fob, ask them to drop the fob into a baggy and then operate the key fob through the baggy. Then return the key to them in the baggy. Gloves for the interior.

In mainland Europe we are just short of "lock down" and we are having social isolation policies but The Dutch are calm going about a simple life without panic. A restricted life goes on here, it is quieter on the streets , people do only essential things. There are no gatherings. The old are told that they must use computer methods to be in contact with their families. Schools are open and the belief is that younger people can have the strength to fight this virus. Hospitals around the worse area of Brabant are on red alert but people are being cared for and all goes well........There is news that some Dutch scientists have made the first breakthrough in creating a possible immunization but mass use is still at least 12 months away. There is no sport , there are no big social gatherings. Pubs in neighboring Belgium are shut. Our boarders are closed and despite misunderstandings but some outside the EU this is possible and has happened both here and in Germany.Major airports are shut or operating very few flights and planes are being turned back to China and the middle east.
There is no 24/7 media coverage fueling panic here and what is given in the way of information comes from University level virologists and medics. There EU is united in its approach and is working together and co-coordinating well, there is flexiiblity where it is appropriate....There is some off shore distant shore which seems to have its own ideas ....it seems it is U turning often, panicking and seems at full stretch.....still they know what is best for them ...they tell us and they don't seem to believe in working together with others or listing to advice..................At the moment, we are right at the centre of this world problem and we are as well prepared as you can be , in Italy it is tough but we are doing well and this is coming to other areas.

Man I loved Holland - I worked there a couple of weeks (Sybase) - my colleagues gave me a book titled - "the undutchables" when I left - I really enjoyed my time with them. A real beautiful place. Our media is a mess - you really have to skim it.

And here in the UK, it's like nothing has happened really in comparison. The complete opposite approach of the rest of the world. It may change. Sure there's some home working and "don't visit care homes" but overall, keep calm and carry on.

Maybe a 100 pack of those vinyl gloves ? A fresh pair of gloves for each intake of a vehicle. My wife uses those for her cake stuff, and I think that's what BBQ'ers use when pulling pork.

The virus has ruined my son's career temporarily.
He is on tour with the band Set It Off.
He is their tour manager and sound engineer.

Their entire world tour has been cancelled.
They are flying back from Australia.

Live Nation / and AEG Entertainment / who employs my son are putting a halt to their business for the time being.
These are the two largest concert promoters in the world.

The virus has ruined the sports and entertainment industry for the time being.
This is going to have a chain reaction on the economy like we have seen with the stock market.
