The First Haven Get Together - June 17th - Sign Of the Beefcarver - Royal Oak Michigan

Whaddaya think, fellas? Take the ferry?

Chicago traffic will always be a problem unless you travel at just the right time of day, and day of the week. Indiana also has this habit of continually having perfectly good parts of I-80 under construction from the MI/IN border to the IN/IL border so, if you hit it at the wrong time of day, you're pooched. (I travel west a few times a year from here via I-80 or occasionally I-90 if traveling futher north.) It once took us over four hours to get from the Michigan/Indiana border to the outskirts of Chicagoland on I-90 (Huntley-ish) thanks to a lot of I-80 construction through Indiana, and any side roads were also heavily congested so there was no faster way around it.

One of the rally organizers who lives near Chicago says he prefers to go out of the way and take something like I-39 or I-355 south to I-80. There's still the southern traffic along I-80 but is probably better than the potential problems of I-294/I-290/I-90 etc. through Chicago.

Despite all that, I'd prefer it over a ferry, as the schedule could be questionable, and assuming the ferry is operational that day.

It's true. Chicago's the unavoidable ugly thing I have to sneak past, and hope not to get caught!
I've tried to time trips to or through Chicagoland so they do not fall during a rush hour.

My best run through the area was last year, November, leaving Eau Claire early on a Sunday morning. I was home by 6pm. Not a single delay even along I-294, and only a patch of slower traffic (barely under the speed limit) on I-80. I think there was one crash on an off-ramp of I-294 but we only backed up for a minute or two to get past.

I did a mad dash to Music Direct and back on a weekday in June last year when I traded in the old turdtable for the new one. Really didn't hit any delays there either, except for stopping for lunch on the way back in Indiana. Only 5 hours or less each way. Not bad considering you have to drive through the heart of downtown to get there.

I remember a Sign of the Beef Carver in Sarnia when I was a kid and many people would cross the border to eat there. Looking at the menu, then the reviews and given the shear number of the choices the Detroit Metro area offers, wondering if there may be some place that better suits our needs. Been a long time since I've had a good cafeteria style meal.

I've eaten there and the food is good, the prices are reasonable and comfortable for anyone, and the restaurant is very welcoming to groups. I took a look at the reviews and it all seemed decent.

I’ve looked into the ferry and decided to pass several times. Check the rates, but it’s like $85/person plus $92 for the car. And one 4 hour crossing from Ludington to Muskegon at 9AM. I also watched a video and the accommodations aren’t great, basically a big area with picnic tables and a counter.
It’s not like a cruise ship at all….

That looks like a great time. I'll have to try that.

Anybody passing through Chicago in the next year or two would be advised to avoid taking the 90 in from the west. There's a multi-year construction project going on and its just a mess. I'd suggest just going around the city entirely if you can, unless you really really really want a hotdog without ketchup and a very long wait in traffic.

Why would you want a hot dog without ketchup?
