The Onkyo Monitor 2000X. I think I’m turning Japanese, I really think so!

They do look well built. Are you getting them up on stands? Fun speakers or harbeth dethroners?

I will be trolling Japanese sites for the matching Stands. The AS-2000X. In the meantime, I found a guy that is building me custom stands to my specs. They should be here soon. These were purchased as a fun speaker. What they are doing off axis and on the ground is unbelievable. They sound amazing at everything I have thrown at them this evening. Harbeths dethroners? Too soon to be sure. But the revolution will be televised.

Well this is an unexpected plot twist.

I'm very interested in where this goes. The closest I ever got to something like this was a pair of Diatones, though I don't remember the model number. They were very nice. Fun speakers that surprise with a shot at the top.... good times!

So far, the best I can describe them is all the accuracy of the Yamaha NS-2000 with more sonic meat on the bone. Deep bass for days. Fast and articulate highs and a clear and consistent Mid range. The whole package is super consistent though. It all comes together in a really good package.

I believe that stands and placement will elevate the sound to a higher perch, sound wise. I am really digging them. They were truly a surprise because they sound very similar to my old Aerial Acoustic 10T. And remember, they are sitting on the floor at the moment. Not ideal setup by any stretch. Apparently no one told them or they simply don’t care.

These Onkyo’s sound better than they have any right to. I have seriously been humbled as my initial biases were so wrong. I was told, no warned, that they would impress me and they most certainly have done just that. They are an excellent speaker. Looking forward to getting to know them better, especially on stands.

Are they with the Scott or Grand Integra? Seems the Grand Integra would make for an incredible family reunion.

The Scott is a tuner that I was testing. They are indeed hooked up to the AG10. And yeah, the are well past the butt sniffing phase.
Not sure if they came out around the same time, if so they were likely voiced for each other or...imagine there is just great system synergy!
Congrat’s on the find.

I think the AG10 (1988-1990) May be a little younger than the Monitor 2000X (1986) by 2 years or so. That would mean that the Scepter 5001 and the Monitor 2001 where around. The Monitor 2001 is very similar in appearance and is really differentiated by finish color (sorry colour) and driver size and materials. I suspect though that they would sound very similar as they spec out the same and the cabinets are the same size and roughly weight. Speaking of weight, I believe that Onkyo fudged those numbers as they, like the AG and DX 10 feel heavier than the specs.

So I got the Monitor 2000X’s off the floor on the finest audiophile crates and ply shelves. Classy and effective. Holy smokes! These speakers are rewarding the effort and back ache. Bass is tight and now controlled. One thing that really struck me but I only found the words for now is how fast they are. I believe the term used is immediacy. I was playing Sturgill Simpson’s cover of The Promise. It is a very Dynamic recording, with Simpsons voice all over the place. It’s beautiful and the Onkyo’s got it absolutely perfect.

I lose some of the vocal magic that the Harbeths just effortlessly convey. The lush Harbeth midrange is also not here. But what I get in return for that sacrifice is a cohesive and dynamic full range. They go deeper and higher than the Harbeths and keep it all together to bleeding ear levels. Big coils, stiff carbon woofers and domes, all with huge motors in a heavy braced and damped cabinet give you musical accuracy. I cannot wait for the stands to arrive. I will also definitely be on the hunt for the actual Onkyo stands.
