This is all mhardy6647's fault.....

It's true....

I was happily listening to the Belles. Looking forward to getting the Volti mid-horns. And then.....

@mhardy6647 went and started having all kinds of fun with Emilar EH-500 horns with Altec and JBL drivers. Well.....Audio ADD immediately kicked in and we are off to the races.

In addition to the Emilar EH-500 and 520 horns I posted on Mark's thread:

I also picked up a pair of Renkus Heinz SSH-800 1" throat horns (bad Internet pic):

A pair of Renkus Heinz SSD-3301 2" 16 ohm 500hz drivers:

And have a pair of Renkus Heinz SSD-1800 1" 8 ohm drivers on the way.

Plans? :)

1) Compare the Emilar EH-500 and 520 horns using the Renkus Heinz SSD-3301 16 ohm drivers and, with the 2" horn to screw mount driver adaptors I found, the stock Klipsch drivers;

2) Dig the Karlsson enclosures out of storage, replace the Altec 604B and 604C with some 8 ohm Eminence 15" Alpha woofers (until I score some 416s ;) ), put the Renkus Heinz 800hz SSH-800 horns with the SSD-1800 drivers on top with an 800hz crossover and see how it sounds. :)

This is all your fault, @mhardy6647 . ;) ;)

My work is done here.

;)

In seriousness, tonnes of fun to be had, there... do pairwise comparisons, don't be afraid to experiment with everything... and see where you end up!
One of them DSP thingies, or a fancy active XO (e.g., with adjustable delay) would be a cool tool to bring to bear on such experiments.

I am -- no kidding -- asking for one for Christmas :) No, I don't expect to get one, but it never hurts to ask, right?

I also asked for a case of hockey pucks... again, I'm not kidding.

:chin

There are -- a few -- loudspeakers at my house.
Quite a few if one also counts raw drivers & suchlike...

I dig hockey pucks. :)

I usually prefer a 2-way system but also found some of the Calrad CT-6 horn tweeters and have the Pyramid (Sequerra) T1 ribbons to use if additional high frequency augmentation is required. ;)

First up, the Emilar EH-520 horns with Renkus Heinz SSD-3301 16 ohm drivers:

Left the Almarro in there to maintain consistency in amplification.

Listening cold, efficiency seems to match up. Will reserve listening impressions until things get nice and toasty.

I will say, however, that these horns and drivers appear to work well together. ;)

More to follow. :)

I too would like something like that. There seems to be a wide range of options out there. Do you have a short list? I'm on the frugal side but in all likelihood I could probably limit myself to a two-way so that may ease the pain :).

you tease, you!

:)

Been listening on and off throughout the day - everything is definitely up to temp. ;)

The EH-520/SSD-3301 combination sounds more "relaxed", not only around the 500hz crossover point but throughout the range. Music seems to "flow" more effortlessly. Detail is there in spades. Attack is very good. Notes have the proper decay. The soundstage seems like it got bigger.

All-in-all, we appear to be moving things forward in a positive direction.

I have a set of adaptors so I can use the screw-on Klipsch K55V driver on the 2" Emilar horns. Definitely want to compare the K55V to the Renkus Heinz SSD-3301.

Also found another interesting horn to try as a replacement mid horn on the Belle. Seems to be getting a positive reception so who knows. ;)

More to follow..... :)

Hooked up the CazTech SE-845 amps this morning. The 845s sure take immediate and complete control of things.

The more I listen on both the Almarro and the CazTechs, the more I think that the EH-520/SSD-3301 combination may well be 1 to 2 db more efficient than the stock Klipsch combination. I have some nice 16 ohm L-pads on the way to verify. Once I dial in the correct attenuation, I can replace the L-pad with two resistors.

Until they get here, I think I'll put the SSD-3301 drivers on the Emilar EH-500 horns and see how that sounds. :)
