I got a text today that it is spotify Wrapped Day when they wrap up let you know about the year of your listening. It's kinda cool, and surprising as the #1 song for me > Litt;e Feat, Rock n Roll Doctor, is not one I ever specifically selected, but it's on some playlists I use and comes on quite a bit when my selection ends and Spotify picks stuff that it thinks I'd like to play. The list was dominated by my cardio workout playlist which was used on over 30+ occasions

I had 1,981 songs played on 13,300+occasions for over 9 days of listening.

This silliness is why I really like Spotify. I mostly listen to Spotify in the gym and in the car on long drives home from nights out in Chicago, which skews my results. The biggest surprise to me is that I listened to 20 genres!

My geological musical soulmate is.... Gothenburg, Sweden! People there listen to the same stuff I do. Especially my top result, which skews that a LOT. Joel Alme. A Swedish singer songwriter that Spotify introduced me to this year, and who I love. He ended up with the top three songs of the year, as well as the top album.

My listening habits evidently most closely match that of Asheville, NC.

Hmm. I’m also still fun in a woodsy boho way, but at least fifteen years past actually being cool.

I primarily listen to Spotify in the car, and most often listen to the playlists provided by the almighty algorithm. This is a slightly different balance of music than I listen to at home.

My 2023 Top Songs

I’m intrigued by what it reveals about how much of a different musical being I am when driving or at the gym than when I’m at home. I rarely listen to anything Spotify noted at home, where it’s Qobuz, records and reels. With completely different songs and genres.

Roon keeps track of everything I listen to at home, and most of it is accurate. But, there have been times when I shut off the amp, leave my DAC powered up, and neglect to shut Roon down and it can play Roon Radio for days.

For instance, there is a track I can remember playing twice, Roon says 26 times. There is a Christmas album that my wife had on repeat one day and it shows that as one of my top LPs.

Wish that there was a method to delete some of the unintentional tracks.

I often fall asleep with Amazon Music on and it does the same thing. According to my year in review I’m obsessed with Tommy and a couple of songs by artists that I have no idea who they are.IMG_0686.jpeg

I'm pretty obsessive about curating my algorithm, liking songs whenever I come across something new that intrigues me. But, for whatever reason, my 'top' list isn't really reflective of it, as it just picked out the albums I happen to listen to all the way through, and ignored much of my listening which is a sort of one-off radio for "aging indie rock fan" that's created based on songs I look up.

I make a ton of playlists. JoDee Messina is my top listened to song? I know I have listened to others more. Probably picked some more to start listening. Maybe not, I suppose, they would know. Country is my top genre, so... Country, Soft rock, Rock, New Wave Pop and Folk. Yep, that's pretty on point for me. Frederic Canada seems to be my music match. It seems I am in the top 8 percent of listeners. Sweet.

It is actually pretty cool they do this. I wait all year to see my year in review. It's fun.

This wrapped thing came up in conversation at work yesterday as we were talking about working with Spotify on something. We were told it was a good time because their developers have finally finished with wrapped, and it occupies most of their time the last couple of months of every year. Seems its more work-intensive than I would have thought on their end. Though, thinking about it, there were also elements I wasn't expecting like one of my top bands having a little quickly filmed "thank you" at the end. It's also hugely popular... one of the most shared things online all year from anybody.
