Ultimate Audioshow Album Cliches?

I like brussel sprouts. Diana Krall...not so much.
Yeah, I like Brussels sprouts, too.
Something about turntables brings out the worst in people -- or maybe brings out the worst people.
Just go on any vinyl/turntable/analog forum and post one word.
Hanpin.

Easiest mode of trolling extant.

maybe one Ya Horng for good measure. ;)

And listen to some Patricia Barber or Holly Cole while you're at it -- or Jacintha ;)
When I first started going to audio shows Holly Cole was all the rage. I still love her albums. I guess it just goes to show that familiarity doesn't always breed contempt.

Actually, I don't have an opinion about Holly Cole one way or t'other. I do think she is/was one of the audiophile darlings... but, heck... I like... Jennifer Warnes. Always have (since her days on The Smothers Brothers Show, in the 1960s). Women with glasses... :)

I either love or hate Brussels Sprouts. Done right, baked, spices, crispy...they're delicious. Boil them or undercook or don't season them...they're downright nasty.
Profound observation.
My parents used to boil them into submission -- and they were nasty.

Many years ago, I worked with a British expat, transplanted to the Silicon Valley. Of the philosophy of traditional English cooking, he observed:
"Boil until no further change occurs"

My mother would (and still does) boil the living daylights out of every vegetable. I grew up convinced that I hated broccoli, brussels sprouts, asparagus, carrots, everything. I once willed myself into puking after eating broccoli because she said I was going to eat it unless I puked. Barfed it right up on command. And now all of those things are among my favorite things to eat, but they're cooked entirely differently. I usually steam things that I don't broil/grill. I -do- love me some old fashioned boiled green beans that are all buttery and soggy, though.

My mom used the pressure cooker a lot - better than boiling, but sometimes a bit...bland (although, IMHO, you can't beat pressure-cooked beets).

But boiling everything sounds horrid.

(I didn't get out unscathed, though, I had to suffer through the great carob, TVP, and bulgur scare of the 1970s)

I spent a few months in the UK. Every meal there was a quiet scream in my head. "You don't have to do this! There are other ways!"
On the other hand there are now tons of really good restaurants in the UK and they have curry. Yes, curry.

The curry-based restaurants are what kept me happily fed. A Bangladeshi restaurant in (on?) Brick Lane offered up maybe the best dining experience, by taste, that I have ever had. Its not all bad! Hooray for the dietary influence of immigrants.

Absolutely, and not just in the UK!

I've never actually been to an audio show... If that's the music they play, why bother?

Then again, I am of that under-30 set that will leave the room if you play anything remotely like Diana Krall.
It's apparent at them that most people of our generation have the same feeling. It's mostly 50's jazz, and kind pretty girl vocal standards/jazz with some prog or Steely Dan thrown in, and of course, Hotel California. I like various forms of jazz including some of what's played at the shows but the whole thing takes on this super-serious feeling, its like the opposite of what I consider fun. I cannot stand audio shows. I'd almost rather go to the dentist (but my dentist is nice, and she is kind of cute and makes good conversation. Plus I get a new toothbrush).

I don't mind Diana Krall, at all. Nor Holly Cole, if truth be told. There's a secret to this, it must be said. I don't listen to jazz vocalists, not even in bed. There, I said it. So when Ms. Krall pops up in a performance on TV, or YouTube or other, I don't cringe, whinge, or otherwise suffer; if I did I might not get supper. ;)

I just went to my first audio show a couple of weeks ago. It was fun. I kind of look at it like going to the car show to check out the Ferrari’s except you do get a bit of a test ride. But what has that got to do with brussel sprouts?

Now you've done it. I've got that song she did on The Smothers Brothers that has a line in the chorus about "time is of the essence" stuck in my mind. Every few years it pops into my head and won't leave for hours. Thanks.

My work is done here.

It used to be Jennifer Warnes "Famous Blue Raincoat"....I learned to loathe that album and only in recent years, began to appreciate it again.
ayuh.

I do like her version of Bird on a Wire.
It is very Eighties, though. :)

I'll second that, it took about a 15 year long break from it before I could enjoy it again.
