Vintage full range drivers - which of these would you pick?

OK, looking to tap the full range collective wisdom here.

Let's say you stumble onto a sizable collection of vintage full range drivers and had to pick one. Whiat are you going home with?

Electrovoice SP12B - familiar white frame

Electrovoice 12TRXB - older copperish curved bell frame

Electrovoice LT-12 Wolverine

Coral 12TX-1

Coral 8-CX7
Burstein Applebee BA-12-3U

Pioneer/Fukuin Electric PW-30C (looks for all the world like a JBL LE-15B clone, so not full range

Pioneer PAX 20E

Pioneer PAX 30C

Jensen Sigma SG-210

I know you got questions... believe me....I do too.

I don't know how any of these sound, but the ones that look the most interesting are the PW-30C and the Coral 12TX-1.

I'm not quite sure what your criterion is for "full range driver". To me that means something like a Lowther, or a single speaker (with or without a "whizzer" cone. Many of the speakers listed don't fit that list.

Anyway....I'd go for the 12TRXB, just through personal experience. Many folks would pick the SP12. Wolverines? Meh.

But the Corals ain't no slouch either...

Never been a big Jensen fan, although those look nice and substantial. No clue on the Pioneers.

I've had the Wolverine LT-12. Nice driver. I would think the Pax drivers would be nice! l

I agree with 12TRXB.
It would great to compare all those.
What fun learning session that would be.

The 12TRXB, and the LT-12 are very nice..you might also want to check out the EV/Knight KN612HC..it’s rated at 50 watts, and has a 5 lb ceramic magnet structure.

Yeah - I meant to add a caveat to my original post. Not all of these drivers are truly full range. However, I believe most of them, with the exception of the JBL looking Pioneer, are meant to cover more bandwidth than traditional drivers.

It's an interesting collection of drivers for sure.

No kidding. I still haven't gotten the full story on them or how the owner went about acquiring them. They're more or less incidental to a much larger personal collection. Impressive to say the least.

Thanks all for the suggestions. I'm mulling it over. The 12TRXB and PAX drivers stood out to me as well.

I was hoping to see some single driver types, but the owner doesn't have any he's aware of.

A lot of the Dulplex, and Triaxial speakers came from a time of the golden age of audio. These are very efficient speakers, usually run with SET, or PP tube amps. When I seen your thread, it reminded me of all the great speakers that came from that era..Goodman’s, EV, Jensen, Knight, University, etc. I own a set of the EV LT-12’s, and the Knight KN612HC’s in 1960 Knight KN1215HC cabinets.

Or, for that matter: Where am I?
Oh, wait. I'm here.
Sort of.

I don't know the answer to the question -- I haven't heard all of these.
I do -- still -- like the tone of the LT-12 coax. It's just very pleasant to listen to.
The 12TRXB is certainly better on paper -- but de gustibus non est disputandum, as they say.

I wouldn't mind havin' any of the Pioneers, nor would I mind havin' the Corals.
Heck, why not collect 'em all!

Had to pick one?
I think on a few of those you better check the tweeters. Some will benefit from a recap.
I'd go with the 12" Corals or the safe bet TRXB. Although those Pioneer woofers are intriguing (if they work)

Lots of full rangers with helper tweeters on the list. Some would say two way drivers. The tweeters are always the weak point on these type drivers. If they aren't workinging its nearly impossible to fix them. All listed could be fun to listen to, but if you want to go that route just get some Altec 604's and be happy.

If truly looking to go single driver the EV's are nice. Others to look for are Corals, Phillips/Norelco and Goodmans.

Now you're speakin my language. I mean Latin of course. But also, I really like the sound of *all*.

This is my hangup with most of these...I'm already running 604-8g in my main system. I wasn't necessarily seeking these out... just happened upon them.

I was kinda hoping a clear favorite might emerge from the vintage driver cognoscenti around these parts. It does sound like the 12TRXB would be a good pick, among others mentioned.

Now that I've got these new-to-me Boleros recapped, I'm feeling a little less enthusiastic.

On the other hand, they're being sold at such a compelling price, I feel honor-bound to our code not to pass up at least one pair.
