Wanted: Small, Cheap, Modern, Unpowered, Rich Sounding, Great Sounding, Desktop Speakers.

I was going to ask your thoughts on the NHTs, what with you being a long term owner and all.

And Cheapaudioman liking something isn’t some that I see as a point in their favour.
I had the original NHT SuperZeros (and SuperOnes) for a very long time before I really got into audio gear. That I had them for about a decade before really being hit with the audio bug kind of says what needs to be said. They're detailed in an "oh here's some detail" kind of way, with absolutely no bass and no dynamics, but they image well. Maybe with 400wpc they open, I dunno. I'm being a bit harsh as they kind of are what they are, but they're just kind of too small to be anything worthwhile. The SuperOnes were a tad better as they had a bit more life to them. But honestly I just thought they sucked. A strange audiophile fad driven by a couple of good reviews in the magazines in an age when small speakers weren't expected to do much.

Your reply John captures to a T what I thought about the Minimus 7 the first time I heard them. I could not understand (and still can't ) what the fuss is about. Audio is physics and there is just not much you can do with a driver that small.

PM does this new device of yours have a pre-level or headphone out? There has been so much development in the small self-powered monitor/speaker world over the last decade or so that perhaps you would consider not using the amp section of this device? It may not be the direction you wanted to go, but it may also be the best way forward in terms of sound and bang for the buck.

I remember my now extinct local dealer had them sounding good with the matching NHT subwoofer whose model name/number now escapes me (SW1S?). Pretty damn good blend, coherent for such an inexpensive setup.

The sub (or a sub) was a must. Without they have no life. They should have been sold as a system (only) imho.

That is a very nice option. Sadly, living In upper Canuckistan, the options are far more limited for us then for our friends to the south. Especially when price is an issue.
Well, I'm up here, too. That link was amazon.ca/ and in CAD
You can hear them if you take a drive to St Catherines, at worst.

I have a pair of Paradigm Titans (V1) collecting dust in my basement that could be yours for the cost of a beer at a local establishment if you ever find yourself in the Detroit area again. Haven’t mentioned them because I think they are a bit large for a desktop (13” x 7.75” x 9.75”).

I’ll definitely take you up on that when I’m in Detroit next. It’s usually twice a year anyway. Love that town!

Yes, that certainly is. Just a lot of the recommendations from the other folks would be great if I lived in the lower 48, but just don’t work with our dollar being in the terlet, plus shipping etc to get them up here.

Any chance you can have “neighbor/friend” order a set and walk them across the border? You’d have to pay him/her in dollars, plus a Linda Ronstadt album to make the deal appealing.
The problem with that being that of the two closest border checkpoints, one is a 4 hour return trip (on a good day) while the other is 8 hours. Could be workable if business took me to those areas, but with our nutso gas prices, I’d be adding as much as $120 to the price of the speakers. Worthwhile for a dream speaker, but not so much for an economy project.

I’ve had a ton of powered speakers, and was an early adopter of that tech, so it’s not something I’m afraid of. However, this setup is more about playing with the fun new toys available, rather then just making sound.

@JohnVF put me onto a very interesting dude that does truly impressive speaker reviews. This one, for example:

He’s very fair and doesn’t expect a budget speaker to be objectively perfect. His measurements are extremely thorough and he explains what he’s doing in layman terms. He also listens to correlate measurements to subjective observations. I really like his channel. I also think he knows what he’s doing more than a certain other measurement guru out there.

I gotta say that the Orb Audio Mod 1's paired with an Audioengine subwoofer does really well in nearfield for me when driven by a Fosi v3. Plus, they take up virtually no space on my desk.

[edit: the subwoofer is under my desk, I should note]

So the first in home trial arrived today. A pair of Polk XT-15. The size (small) and price (very small, thanks to Black Friday), made them irresistible plus, I’ve got some nostalgic warm and fuzzies for Polk anyway.

Well, I gotta say I’m blown away. The Fosi V3/Polk combo is delightful. Just warm, rich and musical as heck. I was afraid that it would be very bright, and was looking at tone control options, but it really doesn’t need it. I’ve just been running everything out of the headphone jack of my MacBook, and it’s just dandy.

I’ll give these a day or two, but so far, I might just do a @mhardy6647 and stay in the Polk club.
