Completed Tonearm for a MK1 Thorens TD 124

Transaction Complete
Hello,

I have had this gorgeous MK1 Thorens TD124 sitting as a winter project...eek it's way past winter and I never touched the table.

Just went to Audiosilente, purchased a new belt, Idler wheel, motor grommets and gel suspension grommets.

It has that weird Grado wood tonearm attached and I would like to replace it. I don't love the look of these table with a 12" arm on them...so thinking I want a 9-10" arm and I will get the standard size armboard.

Whatcha got?

Looking for something interesting, I have a Garrard 301 and it uses a SAEC and Ortofon tonearm. Thinking I want something different from whats on the Garrard. I have no idea on cartridge yet, but I run a 103 as well as I had been running an Ortofon Jubilee on the Garrard, so again want something different...

I have Paypal and own an audio import company, so one way or the other, if you have something cool I am sure we can make something work.

****I have so many projects in my life between all my hobbies, so please no tonearms that need parts, or rewiring etc****

I'd look for something heavy-ish. Mine never sounded quite right with the medium mass arms I had on it... which I suspected, but they're what I had at the time.

Hi @musiqlovr!

A couple of suggestions in the 10" range:

I know there are a couple of Fidelity Research FR24 fans here. This is my favorite for magnetic cartridges: XV15, MP10/11, Shure M3/7D, etc. It can handle a DL103 too but the FR54 below is better, IME/IMO.

Push comes to shove, it'll balance an SPU and bettered only by an FR64fx.

I've been very happy with my Alfred Bokrand AB309. I've seen him advertise a 9" and 10" version. Well worth considering too!

I hope that helps!

Have you guys seen the interesting Alfred Bokrand on eBay?

Thinking to make an offer:

@charles hidalgo @je2a3
Same spindle > pivot mounting distance as the FRs! 👍

Keep us posted!🙂

Those arms have caught my eye also.
On my wish list at this point.
Cant wait to see how it goes for you.

Big fan here of the SoundSmith Paua.
So quiet in the groove you think it might be cutting off the top end. Compared to the Per Winfield on the table next to the Paua revealed that it isn't. There is just less groove noise as well as pops/ clicks are less noticable. The PW is excellent as well just not quite as quiet. @jmathers replaced his Cadenza Black with a SS Zephyr and is very happy for similar reasons.
The SS has the added benefit of reasonable rebuild prices from Peter himself.

That’s a really intriguing arm. I sometimes wish I’d kept my 124 so I could hear it with an arm like that. The last arm I used on it was an FR-24, which I never liked on it. I was online looking for heavier arms for it and ended up finding a table instead that I traded the 124 for, going in a totally different direction. But I miss it.

Id love to hear how it all pans out.

Curious as to what you ended up with. Not to hi-jack this thread
