Went to the New York Audio Show last weekend.

The biggest surprise of the show. Outdoor planter speakers.....that sounded better than 80% of the other speakers at the show!!!! What??????

These OB’s did not impress me at all. It takes serious effort to make Pass Labs sound thin.

And for me personally. The best sound in show. Vinni Rossi integrated with QLN speakers. I will be discussing these speakers in another thread. I am smitten.....

The plants did not help. I will also say, having owned Ohm speakers and heard them set up and playing beautifully before. It must of been the room.

Lots of cool pictures, thanks. I really like the historical stuff, what a great collection. Also I spy my buddy Arnold from Tweak Studio hanging out with that weird magnetic turntable...his store used to be below my apartment in Chicago.

What was the biggest let down?

There were a few rooms where I didn't even bother to stay much less take pictures. I think the Polks were a letdown. Not that they were terrible sounding. Just that they really didn't do anything to set them apart. For a flagship speaker, I expected more. The OBs were not good at all. Powered by 2 Passlabs Amps to boot. Very disappointing.

I've yet to hear a pair of OB speakers I've really liked. Some were ok. Those look like small full-ranger drivers with OB base augmentation. That's a lot of space taken up.

I don't know why these folks don't bring some sort of portable room treatment with them. It seems it would be pretty easy to dominate a show just by taking more care in setup.

So I omitted this thought because I didn't want to admit it. But the Harbeth 40,2's were so dominant in their room. They just sounded bloated and heavy-handed. Flatulent bass does not lend to a good demonstration. No sparkle in the highs at all and the magic Mid-range was smeared because of it. If I were reviewing them based on this setup, I would question the fan clubs sanity. It did help me to decide, however, that unless I get a larger space, the 40.2's are not for me.

Hey Ron, believe it or not I just saw this. Those planter speakers were ironically, UGLY as heck, but sounded quite good!

@Kpatch PS...for me the QLS/Rossi room was the star of the show..they (QLNs) filled a large room without physically dominating the space. They were articulate, deep, musical and offered fine soundstage and front to back depth..really musical yet stimulating sonically. Perfect with the Rossi electronics. Actually a sonic experience that for reasonable $ and size will always be remembered.

Yeah hearing North Mississippi All Stars on those planter speakers was one of the highlights of the show! They were a superb high volume rock speaker and to me surpassed many of the other rooms I heard....
