What Day Is It?

I thought I would start a thread on the ubiquitous National "Whatever" Day to share important information with the HFH crowd. I know, everyday is National Whatever Day, but some of them are truly interesting and important. For example, everybody should have National Joe Day marked on their calendars; March 27. It's a great day to set aside to celebrate all the Joe's in your life. I will periodically be sharing the important days that Pop up (see what I did there?) and I encourage anybody else to add to this important activity, regardless of what nation you live in.

Anyway, just wanted to wish everybody a happy Fibonacci Day 🎉🎆. A truly international day of celebration. November 23 is celebrated as Fibonacci day because when the date is written in the mm/dd format (11/23), the digits in the date form a Fibonacci sequence: 1,1,2,3.

Correct! Like one of my retired friends says, "there are six Saturdays and one Sunday in each week".
speaking of weeks and calendars -- and, implicitly, of modular arithmetic; albeit not of Fibonacci*.

...or, of course, as they say in The Windy City :)

Blame Michigan. The Michigan congressman Gerald Ford observed, “Congress is in no mood to tamper with the calendar.”

Heck, they can't even agree to stop playing with the amount of daylight we get each day; spring forward, fall back. Why?

And today is J.R.R. Tolkien Day.

"J.R.R. Tolkien Day on January 3 is “The Lord of the Rings” author’s birthday and you’re encouraged to toast him in celebration. You may remember from the story that Frodo toasts his Uncle Bilbo on Bilbo’s birthday every year. Now, over sixty years after the trilogy’s original publication, The Tolkien Society asks fans to honor Tolkien’s birth, which itself was January 3, 1892. Come up with a few words of adulation on your own, or use the official Society phrase: “The Professor!” If you want to celebrate J.R.R. Tolkien Day with a few extra meals in addition to the toast, in true hobbit fashion, Frodo would certainly approve!"

I honestly don't remember when I first read Tolkien's Lord Of The Rings trilogy, but I'm going to guess it was middle school? I know it was the first time I had ever read something so lengthy. And I was enthralled. I've reread it many times over the years and it is on my list of favorite books to have with me if ever I find myself stranded on a desert island.

Wonder what I should toast with? Mead?

If you listen to the local classical FM station in these parts you'll always know what "international day" it is as one announcer or the other always tells us. International Hotdog With Mustard Day (ok, I made that up)? They'll let you know.

Mead would be just dandy. I like a nice, dry mead.

Somewhat embarrassed to say I have never had mead. But I just checked and the first Saturday in August is designated as Mead Day. So I'll be putting that on my calendar to remedy the situation.

I've not yet tried mead, either. I've been trying to talk my brewer son into producing some, but so far he hasn't been into that. I'll have to buy some to try!

Detroit Vineyards makes a a few types of mead.
I used to buy this one fairly often. We actually served some at our wedding back in 2013.

Damn, I can’t keep up, is it already January 24, or Beer Can Appreciation Day, and I still have my National Blonde Brownie Day decorations up from Jan 22.

I had made a giant batch of Popcorn for National Popcorn Day on the 19th but didn’t finish it, so I put it out for the Squirrels on the 21st for Squirrel Appreciation Day.

On the 20th it was both National Cheese Lover’s Day and National Disc Jockey Day, so I made up a nice cheese plate and delivered it to WEMU, home of my favorite DJ.

The 21st was also National Hugging day, but I decided to skip that this year because of my fear of the Rona.

On January 22, National Blonde Brownie Day, we baked a bit batch of Unleaded Blonde Brownies. Then went out to celebrate National Fruitcake Toss Day with a couple of friends that defiantly fit into the fruitcake category, but can really toss a fruitcake.

The 23 was National Handwriting Day so I copied some of my mom’s recipes in my best handwriting and sent them off to my niece and nephew.

Since today is a doubleheader, both Beer Can Appreciation Day & National Peanut Butter Day, I decided to have a can of Peanut Butter Porter and listen to some tunes.
