Woody's Social Distancing Hifi Adventure

Nice shipping container.

I'd say overkill... but I really don't think it was. In hindsight I should have done two smaller ones cause it weighs about 90lbs with both amps in it. I think shipping two smaller ones would have been cheaper... but there is a chance that something could happen to one amp then. Either way... it did its job awesomely.

You know, when I was finishing up the bottom covers and installing them yesterday I should have snapped some. I didn't... but they still look just like the ones Dave posted in his thread documenting the work over on AK. Here they are reposted here. Along with his pics of my Pelican case I did for them.

The small board is Dave's NFB circuit which he developed for these. I wasn't looking for the most purist restoration... I was looking for the best.

It's nice to see that he EFB(tm)-ed the amps while he was in there. I consider EFB as one of the single greatest improvements that can be made to a Dynaco Stereo 35 amp, and I'm sure it works a treat on other cathode-biased amplifiers as well.

It was definitely optional... but I felt like peoples responses to his other EFB implementations, it was smart to do. He said he was really pleased with the results. And I'm thrilled with all of it!

I've been following Dave's tube antics for years (my triode-strapped W4-AM amps use a reworking of the Williamson circuit that Dave uses on his own personal amps - I built them with his remote guidance). I've been trying for a while to get him to join HFH as I'm sure he'd enjoy the company. :)

(plus he and @paulbottlehead could talk shop / swap war stories)

Those are drop dead gorgeous, and having just read through Dave's post at AK, I'd say they have never been better. What an outstanding rebuild/reengineering! The fact that he recommends the GL Genelex KT88s (comparing them to SED 6550Cs - my all time favorites) wasn't lost on me, either. I think I found the next quad of output tubes I'll try in my TAD-60.

Congratulations!

I know the amps kinda easily stole the show on this thread, but it looks like Drop has that Topping D50S right now at $225.

That’s probably true but my experience is limited to the Emilar and 32 horns. Both of them sound better mounted on a vertical baffle such as the front panel the woofer is mounted on. I suspect metal horns in particular benefit from being rigidly attached to a wood surface; there is probably some damping going on.

Of course the 32 also benefits from being oriented in the right direction instead of upside down. That isn’t a factor with the Emilar since it is symmetrical.

I've been promoting the same too concerning horns being better in baffles. The Altec 811 and 511 kinda get a luke warm reception, but sound a whole lot better when surrounded by wood, ie the Model 19. The Emilars are much thicker gauge metal than the Altecs and that should help them as well.
Those look great powder coated Woody.

Try a 25 pound bag of shot placed over the horn as a trial. Seemed to help my 32b's and I'm using them on the 3d printed horns I'm enjoying now.

...and if you don't have a bag of shot, try a bag of rice or beans or pretty much anything that would make a great mess if you dropped it on the kitchen floor!

I liked the lead shot as it gave me a chance to rub shoulders with some folks I don't interact with often as well as using a toxic substance in more than two ways. We are close to Flint after all. 🙄

Let's figure out how to encapsulate these things in water.......or some liquid substance! (actually that would be interesting.....)
