Would an AVC work for me?

Just wondering if a Slagle AVC would work with my gear.

Source is Gustard DAC-X22
2V @ 50ohm. SE
5V @ 100ohm XLR

Amp input impedance 2.5kohm to 14.5kohm

Either SE or XLR with adapter to RCA if that's what is more compatible

I'll presume the the SE output impedance is 50 ohms and not 5 ohms?

You should be fine driving either a TVC or a PVA with a 50 ohm source.

Please tell me more about your amp? The 2.5k ohm minimum input impedance on the amp is pretty brutal. Even the 14.5k ohm input impedance would be difficult for most tube preamps (except something like the vintage Quicksilver Full Function Preamp with a 12.5 ohm output impedance).

The Slagle Autoformer based TVC should work. I'd try to keep the TVC to amp cable run as short as possible.

Like @Redboy , I'm in the "plug it in and try it" camp. That's the only way to know for sure. :)

Just my opinion.

Yes corrected to 50ohm for RCA.

Emailed Dave and he said it should be an excellent match especially since my amp has such a low min input impedance and fairly low max input as well.

Hmmmmmmm..... Lots to think about now.

Oh and the amp. It's a bit of a prototype but it's based on the Anaview AMS 1000-2600 with no input buffer. Direct signal to amp module.

"prototype but it's based on the Anaview AMS 1000-2600"
would love to hear more about this amp
found some threads comparing them favorably to hypex ncore

The amp is a prototype of a production amp that a friend of mine overseas sells. I can post pics tomorrow but cannot disclose his business name.

I think he's building his production amps with tube buffers or something else now to bring it up to the standard input impedance for most preamps. However, how mine is built offers superior sonics as long as you drive it with a capable preamps.

So with it's low input impedance I'm really surprised to know Dave Slagle thinks it will be an excellent pairing with my current DAC.

Being as the MicroZOTL didn't work out I think this might be something worth considering. But choosing between a passive and my first option (Nyal Moscode Minute in A modded by Stephen Sank) is going to be something to think about. Having an active preamp or passive...

I'm curious about this too. From what I was taught (many years ago and the memory does tend to be rusty), we want a low output impedance driving a high input impedance. Most of my tube amps are in the =>100k ohms input impedance. My 300B amps are 1m ohm input impedance. I think that the input impedance of your amp will be a challenge but if Dave says his Autoformers are up to the task, I'd defer to his knowledge of his Autoformers and what they are capable of driving.

The Slagle Autoformers do have an advantage over the Electraprint PVA in being able to accept sources with higher output impedances and then drive the amp with the lower output impedance the autoformer provides.

If you are still looking at an active preamp, you will need one with a very low output impedance to drive your amp. As I noted in my previous post, the Quicksilver Full Function Preamp (no longer made but there are used units around) sounds really good, has a 12.5 ohm output impedance and will definitely drive your amp.

Just my opinion.

Keep in mind that you’d have to buy two sets of modules to build a balanced/XLR pre.

I never intended on a balanced unit. But could take advantage of the shorting plug to reduce XLR to RCA. I assume I'd still maintain the XLRs output voltage and impedance. Right?

Alright. Well, with the money I got back from the MicroZOTL and the few emails I spoke with Dave Slagle I just went ahead and placed my order. Ordered up some knobs and now I'm looking to buy some panel mount RCA jacks as well as some wire. Speaking of which. Those of you with experience, what size wire should I buy for this thing? Size/brand recommendations wanted.

Well done, Sir! :)

I will follow your progress with interest. :)
