As the title says, looking for information about the HeathKit AS-101 production timeline

Came across some historical data in Stereo & Hi-Fi Times winter 1974 magazine:

Altec 846B $399.00 each, weight 99 lbs also available in sanded unfinished Birch w/ cloth grill for $349 each

Heath AS-101 $269 each weight 101lbs the finish was called Walnut, however Audio magazine October 1974 listed them as Pecan finish $319.95 as a kit…

My AS-101s have a Bi-amp post option

The internal color is a bit more green than the older gray/green I’ve seen, not sure that’s very discernible…

Thanks,
Andy

... and from my own somewhat random collection of Heathkit catalogs & ephemera:

(from a 1972 catalog)

I assume that you know that Heathkit's 'repackaging' of Altec drivers/designs goes way back. If you didn't, here's an example. 😎

PS I assume youse guyses know about these resources -- but, on the off chance that you don't...

oh, and -- as long as I am at it    :o -- in 1961, following the lead of the US car manufacturers, Heathkit even downsized their Legato ;)

Thanks so much, yeah I knew it went to 1960, my oldest audio magazines are 1956/57 and they don’t have any mention—but that’s an argument from silence :chin

Searching for the first & last offering of the AS-101

Heath‘s first offering of the AS-101 with the bi-amp option (your 1972 add is the earliest so far)

Glad to be of service.
As many have doubtless noted, I take the monkeys and typewriters approach to posting on internet audio forums. Once in a while, I'll get one right and/or even be useful. ;)
I do always try to provide light entertainment, of course -- 'cause so much else doesn't these days. :o

Find it interesting that there’s not more information on the AS-101 history, got to be a backstory in there somewhere :think

Mine are from either 1970 or 1971, only a single set of hookups on the back panel.
I'm going from memory on the date, not sure how I got that, maybe date codes?

Bill:

That fits with my research so far, I’ve looked through every online catalog that’s available from 1956-80 and the offer of the AS-101 is probably 1970- 1977 however not all the catalogs are available.

1970-1971 single speaker post
1972-1977 bi-amp capability

Some adds list “Walnut“ finish while others “Pecan“ and I’ve noticed that in website pictures some cabinets are slightly lighter colored than others….

One thing of note, the Radio Museum entry date is “1965??” and that’s obviously incorrect Speaker AS-101 Speaker-P Heathkit Brand, Heath Co.; Benton Harbor MI | Radiomuseum

Thanks for contributing,
Andy
