Picked up one Altec A8 today.

The parts in that listing are probably worth $500, so that would be $1500 for the wood.

I didn’t know what the going rate on these is. Just saw an orphan A8 and remembered this thread.

When you put it that way...yeah, not a great deal.

H'mm...Until I looked at that auction, I was under the impression that the A8 had 802s rather than 806 drivers.

I'm pretty sure A8s will sound good (never heard) but they be some FUGLY cabs. That is not to say that I don't secretly want a pair...

It seems possible to find somebody who would hack together a pair of those simple rectangular boxes for under a grand, probably even build them a little better than Mother Altec did.

Still be fun to grab a second A8 to play with. Just not at that price.

A8 would probably sound great on pedal steel.

That speaker has a replacement late-model woofer but it seems to have somewhat better internal bracing than the $2k unit. Maybe somebody tweaked it up.

Good thing I 'm not in Austin anymore or else that box would be in the back of my pickup truck!

You know there’s an app out there where someone traveling from one state to another will drive it to you for a small fee. The Uber of shipping if you will. (Called Roadie I believe).
