I think this is what happens...

It would be a fun car to drive. Back in '73 one of the cars we got to drive in driver's ed was a VW Beetle. I remember I killed it in an intersection waiting to turn left when I released the clutch a little too fast and not enough gas. My school buddy in the back seat was razzing me for that when Mr. Windner, the driver's ed. teacher told him to shut up because his time at the wheel was coming up!

Back in the 80s for many years I had a '68 Karmann Ghia. It was great fun with the lowered suspension, big valve twin-port 1.6L motor and a Monza extractor exhaust. No sneaking in late with it!

I had a buddy in college with a Common Gear* (Karmann Ghia).

* As either Henry N. Manney III or maybe it was Dick O'Kane used to call 'em. :) Time has left a patina of haze over those memories.

Since the photographer took his photos of a mild California custom and only from the front / interior, I can't really tell the year with any accuracy. My best guess is that it is a '64 or '65 based on the lack of horn ring on the steering wheel and the older-style headlight covers. I'd be curious to see if it has a built motor in there - a Gene Berg mill would be apropos.

For the record, I never owned a bug, but I did have a Type III Squareback during high school and college.

(also, I think he's missing his fuse box cover under the dashboard)

Is everyone here conversant in Aussie ? When he described early in the process that the car had chooks in it... chooks = chickens. Bet it was a real mess.
Yeah, gross!

I went to school with a bunch of Aussies and Kiwis and Brits when I lived in Indonesia, some years back. Good times! :)
