Thinking about a New cartridge

Pro-tea-eye?
Works for me.
In my academics days ;) I learned the strategy for pronunciation of abstruse words. The trick is to look confident and, with no hesitation or change in vocal pace or timbre*, just say it. One can be way wrong -- but if the speaker projects enough confidence, no one will ever call you on it!🧐

Hmmm... that may not carry over too well to the written word, as I reflect on the topic... :o

When I first read your post, I thought you were asking about the plural of Prius -- but then I realized you'd never be asking about that!
:confused::confused::confused: ;)

Award winning post right there. One just has to have a familiarity with Hardy’isms.

very cool. Is that a shaving cream brush? What a great idea!

Yup. It's a shaving brush.
Its handy for cleaning dust off our BOSTON AUDIO CARBON MAT too - before the vinyl lands.
I tend to rotate it with the motor rather than against it, to avoid unnecessary strain.
I hold back on the shaving cream... 😁

Fried my Hana ML. Embarrasing story. Anyway, my current list of contenders includes SS Zephyr, Hana ML, and Shelter (low output, not sure which model yet. I will be installing on a Origin Live Encounter. Genres mostly span through pure jazz and fusion jazz. Thoughts?

I am a huge fan of the Soundsmith line. Love the Paua! But I've heard 3 Zephyr carts on 3 different tables and loved them as well. The only cart I like as much is the Ortofon Per Winfield.

A followup question. This is general, not specific to any brand. Why would someone opt for a high ouput version (e.g., Hana MH) versus a low output version (e.g., Hana ML) with a SUT? I have not compared two versions of the same model of any manufacturer. The costs are typically the same with the exception of needing a SUT.

For what its worth I had a Hana ML that I loved (and which met a sad demise) and also a Shelter 501mk2 and I didn't like the Shelter at all.

I may go the route of the Zephyr if I buy another somewhat spendy cart.

With the SoundSmith MI carts apparently there's no actual benefit to going lower output, but he supplies them because people want them. That's from Peter himself, and also by how MI carts work. As with MCs.... not sure but I've only ever liked one HOMC, the Dynavector 10x5... I picked up a high output Benz glider, only because it was cheap, and I have to think the lower output one sounded better as the high output one was just... not very good.

Second question first. The fewer coils utilized for the low-output carts is SUPPOSED to translate into better tracking and sonics. I think the law of diminishing returns applies for me. That said, both my daily drivers are 0.3 and 0.4mV carts.
The MI carts by definition are low mass and have no wires hooked to the cantilever as in a MC.

I also find that all the SS carts I have heard are exceptionally good at minimizing groove noise without loss of detail.
