"Dating your ex." You sold it then bought it again.

I'm curious what others have sold and then after some time has passed, you missed whatever it was and bought it again. Whether the same thing exactly or another one just like it.
unnamed.jpgThis came to mind yesterday as I was driving to Wisconsin to pick up a Yamaha A-1 integrated amp from around 1979. Which goes down as the ONLY vintage piece I've ever re-bought. Except this one is in much better condition than the previous A-1 I had.... which was found in a Salvation Army around 2008 disguised as Black Plastic Crap in a pile of Pro-Logic receivers. when its anything but. It also had a giant Playboy Bunny sticker on it, further disguising its greatness.
I found myself needing something super-simple for my wife. Something where she could just turn on ONE THING, and play records the dining room setup, which she uses more than I do. Prior to this, my Leben integrated was in there...so there was worry about leaving tubes on, in an enclosed space, plus remembering what input the phono stage was assigned to, and then also wondering if the phono stage was actually ON, and if it wasn't, the power switch is on THE BACK. Because..."audiophile".

And when this popped up on FB Marketplace, I remember how surprisingly good it was, despite me not having much affinity for '70s solid stage. And I also remembered what was most notable about it was its phono stage.... which can be run directly into the power amp by pushing the brightly lit "DISC" button on the front. So if all the lights are lit.... records are good to go! Easy..and great sounding Plus I think its cool in a sleeper kind of way. My favorite vintage integrated of all of the vintage integrated amps I've had, which is 'several'.

Anyway... what have you all re-bought after getting rid of? I figure its one of the best signs of quality out there.

Even in the 70s, I wasn't in the market for Yamaha equipment but always appreciated their approach to audio and any I'd heard in demos were always favorable. Today, even though I've never owned any of their stuff, if someone asks for a new component that should sound good, I usually point them to Yamaha. Good score!

I've never repurchased anything. I think part of it is because 1) I haven't disposed of many things and 2) I am clinging to a few items even after the upcoming purge just due to the circumstances of finding identical replacements in the future. (I mean, where else am I going to find a pair of Vandersteen 2CEs for $300?) I did trade a turdtable in June 2022 for a substantial upgrade; I miss the looks, but don't miss the poor build quality, the fussiness, and the unreliability.

I have a couple regrets for the few things I've disposed of, but only out of nostalgia. I have no room for anything else, and no systems to use extra components in.

This is the only vintage Yamaha piece, that I've had, that I've loved (I knew a guy with a pair of BX-1 Class-A monoblocks from around this same time that were AWESOME). Other pieces I had were CR-2020 and CR-2040 receivers, and a CA-1010 integrated.... all nice enough, but missing something this A-1 has... personality. It's not the best integrated I've owned (My Luxman L-507 gets that crown) but its up there, competitive with the Sony TA-F808es I had, better than the Sansui AU-x901 and Accuphase E303x and an older Luxman that I'm foggy on the name of. L-480? One of those "Duo-beta" amps...blech. The one that night have beaten the A-1 was a Luxman 5L-15 that Fiddleye has now...that was a special piece, way better than the separates from the same series.

I bought and restored a pair of McIntosh MC30s about 15 years ago.

Sold them.

Bought another pair about ten years ago.

Sold them.

I'd kinda like to find another pair.
I had a very special Dynaco Stereo 70 that didn't sound like a Stereo 70, very competently refurbished with a few mods...and I sold it when I moved back to Chicago. I occasionally look around for it, as I would recognize this one due to some physical mods it had that were unique to it... and if I see, I'd buy it back. But ONLY that exact one. It was just a special sounding piece. Of my entire collection that I sold, that's really the only thing I miss (I sold the A-1 long before that big sell-off).

I have the same Altec 4722 transformers I sold to a Lenco Heaven member in Europe and bought back.

I have owned and sold the Goldmund Mimesis 3 twice. The odds of finding another are slim though, so that will remain a fond memory. I have lost count of the times I have owned and sold off a technics sl-1200Mk.... I have bought and sold several SP-10's also. Same with the Denon 103, I now keep one in the pile to prevent me from buying another.....again. I have owned the Sony SCD-1/777es a few different times.
My current stand out is my Modwright modified Sony SCD-XA5400es SACD player. So nice, I bought it thrice. there will not be a fourth time as it is not leaving me again......period. It ranks as one of the finest disc players I have ever owned at any price point bar none.

Oh yeah, I bought a DL-103 twice. But I didn't sell the first one, it broke. And...I wish I hadn't bought it. I'll remember next time. One time I dated an ex and we broke up, again, a year later. The next ex I dated, I married. So you never know.

I kind of re-bought my Sony SS-m7 speakers in the form of SS-m3s. But the 3s weren't as good as the 7s. Not bad at all, but not great.

There's many things I know I'll never own again. Quad ESLs.... sound great but not worth the hassle and limitations. Various Fisher tube gear (I learned I prefer Scott and others). Bouncy turntables. A wall of vintage receivers.

I've bought and sold two Transfiguration cartridges now, if that counts. Couldn't get the first one to track hot passages so I sold it. Then bought another and had the exact same issue.

And you know, I might buy a third if the price was right ;-) It is almost worth it just to hear how amazing they sound on quieter vinyl.

That would drive me nuts..nothing sends me running farther, faster, than sibilance and mistracking. It must really be something when tracking something it can handle for you to go back to it.

The only Cart that was harder for me to set up than the Transfiguration carts is the Ikeda cantileverless carts. Had to pull out all the tools to get the Transfiguration carts I have owned to play through the whole record. But they reward you for the effort with a sound that absolutely defies the physics of the format. Perhaps one of the most effortless and expressive carts I’ve owned. But yeah, to get it there is just too much work and for someone like me that swaps carts in and out, it is just not viable.

There’s pieces I’ve owned more than one of, and pieces I used to own that I’d buy again, but up to this point, the only one I bought again specifically because I wanted to use it is the Technics SL-1600. Since it’s going to live with my SiL’s family, I guess I’m looking for a third one.

I have bought and sold three pair of JBL L26 speakers. They are some of my favorite smaller speakers. Well “smaller” when compared to my typical very large floor standers. I keep coming back to them, refinish the cabinets and then get offered really good money, that I can’t pass up. I love that LE25 tweeter.

I don't even remember how many Oracle Alexandria's I've had. Four at least. I had a nicely built Delphi also, with a SME IV, and while the Delphi was the "better" table, I still prefer the Alexandria. It's one of those "just right" tables that has always made me smile. The one caveat? The Prelude arm it comes with likes lightweight, high compliance cartridges. Not surprisingly, I like those too.

Why do you keep getting rid of them? And maybe you should buy another...I know of some carts...

It's not like I've been shopping for another or anything....

The first one was due to an international move. The following three were always a matter of "upgrading". Folks on the internet said there were better ones.
Plus, at one point there was a miserable relationship with an unhappy woman. Buying audio gear was the fix that kept me going.
