What have I got myself into.

It seems that about once a year my thoughts drift towards the use of a vintage turntable; one whose arm has a removable head shell and can accommodate a low compliance cartridge. One year I posted here asking about broadcast turntables. Dodged that bullet. I did get advice to join Lenco Heaven, which I did three years ago. Haven't spent much time there, or posted anything yet.

This year the annual thoughts returned, this time with no consideration for a broadcast table. The big names, the Garrards and the Thorens, just too spendy. I got really interested in some of the Japanese idlers - Neat, Pioneer, and so on. Very tidy machines. I peppered a couple of helpful members with questions, and was quite keen on a Neat P-68, advertised elsewhere.

And today something finally followed me home.

Not a Neat. (obviously) I'd been considering the relative lack of information available for the Japanese idlers, and potential difficulty with obtaining spare parts if required. For the heck of it I did a search for Lenco, and there was one available locally. And there's all kinds of information available for the various Lenco models. And practically a cottage industry for parts, upgrades, etc. That's what swung me over to the Lenco side. This one has been serviced, and is ready to play. Over time I'll be considering another tonearm, plinth, etc etc.

What have I got myself into.

Youre in good company right now. Here’s a little inspiration for you.

I hadn't seen that article yet. And it touched on one thing right away that I was puzzled about. I was told mine had new V blocks, and came with a spare pair. They are silicone and I thought that was an odd choice of material for that function. In the article Herb mentions brass which to me seems a better choice. Not a problem though.

Herb's L75 looks like an identical model to mine, though his is in better condition. I think my first step will be to get one of the lighter headshells. And a DL-103 is going to happen at some point.

What model is the one you showed ?

Nate's patina special is an L70 sold in the US as a Bogan B60
My favorite of the Lenco line up.
I've had 2 of those and 3 L78s.
All modified, I've never had one as nice as yours to listen to in stock form.
This is by far my most favorite build.

I thought my Lenco (Bogan 62) sounded better than my TD-124 if that’s encouraging? A fully nodded one with a new plinth and top plate was one of the best tables I’ve heard.

On my own, all I did was replace the idler and drop it in a layered plinth with a Linn Basik arm on it that I had laying around. It was a great table. Slayed a clearaudio concept rather convincingly in a direct comparison, despite how homely my particular one looked.

This is the L78 I built for Lucy's living room system.
Ply plinth with cut down stock top plate or "pan" cut.
Has a very nice bearing made by Lenco Heaven member.
If I get her to let my try it in the main system she might not get it back

Ed has it right. Mine’s a Bogen B61 and I really dig that spare, simple aesthetic. It has a different arm than yours, but the motor, bearing and platter assembly are basically the same.

Spun the first record yesterday.

I didn't like the cartridge it came with. So here was my opportunity to try the AT 3600 type cartridge I got a few years ago. It's one of those ones that were going super cheap - under $20 CAD, shipped. It works !

I'm not likely to stick with that cart; fortunately there's a certain blog which is chock full of useful information. And that's given me some direction to follow.

Edit: I'm also having loads of squirrel moments looking at accessories and parts. Too much fun.
