Good TV While Locked in the House?

My wife and I blazed through both seasons of Amazon's Fleabag yesterday. I can't say that I'll think it'll be the type of thing a lot of Havenites enjoy but I loved it. Dry British wit, main character a 33 year old women, bit of a wreck with her dating/sex and family life, reminds me a lot of people I know, Extremely well written, very unique, lots of breaking the 4th wall. The main character reminds me a bit of Noel Fielding from The MIghty Boosh in commentary and wit but its more of a drama than that show, and not absurdist. Just something about her (and the locale her accent is from).

Recommended to us by my SIL, who looks more than a little like Phoebe Waller-Bridge. We enjoyed it, and I was surprised that the second season managed to match or improve on the quality of the first season. Top tier TV.

So many British shows collapse under the weight of having to follow up on a meticulously-conceived first season (*cough*Downton*cough). Speaking of, Peep Show’s first season (which feature’s Fleabag’s Olivia Colman) covers similar ground to Fleabag in being a wickedly funny showcase of broken masculinity. They drove the concept into the ground pretty quickly, and it became an IASIP-type “how depraved can they get” romp.

I enjoy It’s Always Sunny In Philadelphia despite it being long past it’s sell-by date. It’s too much shouting for me to binge on, though.

Resurrecting this somewhat dormant thread... while we aren't locked in the house any longer here in NY, it appears we might actually be swiftly headed back in that direction. Worse yet, much of the lower 48 probably should be in lock down, even if they are not.

That said, I had lost track of which TV shows have actually been able to shoot a new season. Because I watch very little TV other than live sports (also not really a thing right now other than NFL and a few other exceptions), I just assumed that no new TV show production had been possible over the last 6-7 months.

Today a colleague of mine sent me an email asking if I had watched the season premiere of The Curse Of Oak Island on the History Channel last night. This had flown entirely under my radar, I didn't know a new season was in the can and ready for broadcast, and neither did my colleague, she said she had missed the airing on Tuesday night, but planned to stream it tonight. I thanked her for clueing me in.

The Curse Of Oak Island is the #1 non-fiction show on cable TV in the U.S. and the new episode marks the start of Season 8. I have watched every season of it going back to 2013. Tonight I streamed the 2-hour season premiere that aired Tuesday night and enjoyed it very much.

Are there any other fans of this show among HFH members? Even though they've found no treasure, I still find it to be a very interesting show.

Apparently there's a scripted drama about Chess that is way better than you'd think a show about chess would be. "The Queen's Gambit" Other than that I've just been watching various documentaries new and old, and the Mandalorian because I'm a star wars nerd. I haven't seen anything in a while that was truly memorable, but also haven't been watching as much TV since it was nice outside. As we begin to bunker down again, I'll be on the lookout.

If you want a funny series (on Hulu), try 'What We Do In The Shadows' (FX). Very funny series based upon the premise created by the 2014 movie (same writers as the movie). Vampires meet reality TV / documentary crew in Staten Island, NY. Only 2 seasons so far, but the cast is fantastic and the writing is excellent.

If you haven’t already seen the trailer it is well worth checking out. Never thought a show about chess would be so interesting (Not to be watched with little ones around).

I enjoyed the first season of The Mandalorian quite a bit, and while I'm sure anyone with a passing interest in Star Wars has seen it (it's arguably the best thing the franchise has spawned in nearly 40 years), I'd make sure to recommend it to anyone who's into westerns. Like Lucas's original six movies, the series is a hodge-podge of different genres - The Mandalorian re-imagines Lone Wolf and Cub as a space cowboy oddyssey.

S2E1 "The Marshal" is easily the best new western I've seen in years. And while it's packed with visual call-backs to earlier Star Wars material, It's also not a terrible introduction to the series, and will be accessible to any western fan.

I'm finding more and more that a lot of programmes on TV are really just "schedule fillers" with no more worth than that.

I started watching The Queens Gambit last night and we ended up watching three episodes. Very good, smart, show. Not a nail-biter, doesn't really manipulate you into watching the next one. A nice change of pace. It also reminded me how bad I am at Chess.

Not sure if this has already been mentioned (I am getting old and repeating stuff)...but it’s worth checking out:
Netflix; Fisherman's friends.
