a few bits of reinforcement last night.....

The wife and I got to escape the house and grandkids last night to go down to South Street in Philly, to catch a show by a blues singer I know and her band. Great night out, I can strongly encourage anyone with a chance to see Gracie Curran and her band to do so. I digress, however, because seeing a live club show reinforced some topics on here of late about listening, reproduction of 'live' sound, etc. In a club setting, a small combo like that one yielded very little of what an audiophile would call 'soundstage' or 'pinpoint placement and imaging'. Still the sound had a certain presence and ambiance, along with the percussion heft mentioned here by a couple folks. Another thing that hits home is the matter of 'normal listening volume' which has come up. I can now say, empahtically, that I seldom listen at anything close to the levels I did in the Philly nightclub room. Sometimes, listening sessions with the local Usual Suspects at our homes will APPROACH the sound pressure out of that 3-piece band with vocalist, but often not. My thinking about my goals is thus in flux, because what I'm trying to get in my living room is something with the presence, but at lesser volume, and that may well not really be possible(sort of like saying I want a red painting but with blue paint). Oh, well, enough rambling for one morning. Off to flip over the LP of Memphis Slim playing on the old Pioneer, and get the second cup of coffee.

50% of my musical listening is live and everyone in my family plays a musical instrument but myself so i have a good idea of what i`m searching for in an audio reproduction system.

I also have the GoldenEar Triton2 speakers and they are very capable of getting into the ballpark of the live performance, excellent presence, resolution and ambiance can be produced via these speakers and at different listening levels. They are not what i call an old man speaker with a bandwidth limited to the comfortable middle.

Two items brought out the best in these speakers for ME, the LM 518IA SET integrated and the new LampizatOr Level 4 DAC. I have never been closer to getting that live sound in my home even at low volume levels, i very seldom get past the 9 o`clock position on the volume control yet i still get the same presence, resolution, ambiance and dynamics of higher volume levels and at higher volume levels it`s more of the same but with increased energy. My mood at the time determines on how i want to listen and if i want to put myself in the second row of the performance.

In short your speakers have the capability of getting what your after.

Just my $.02.....

My point of reference is live, unamplified music. Orchestra, Chamber, Jazz that is not run through the house PA, Acoustic Guitar, etc.

TJLitt - I agree that, when listening to amplified live music, many of the spatial cues for soundstage, location of specific musicians, etc. are easily lost.

The Golden Ear Triton 2 look very interesting. With active bass drivers, I can see where the mids/highs can be driven by an 845 based SE amp.

I'll bet they sound sweet. :)

oh, the Triton's are the peak performer in my lineup, to be sure, and thanks for the kind words. In response to RH67's observations, it isn't that
the system isn't able to create an accurate illusion of spatiality and oomph at low volumes, I was simply noting that it almost has to to be satisfying
to me, as I never approach live levels. That Line Magnetic amp looks interesting, and while avoiding tubes so long as grandkids are running loose
around here, a longer term option to persue. Tube, duly noted about the nature of performance for live music. Far more spatiality in some types than
others. I don't listen to much full orchestral music, but do like Chamber music and love small combo jazz in an intimate setting, both, as noted, having
different acoustical cues.

Yes, the active bass drivers allow the LM to do it`s thing. The designer of the GoldenEars uses a LM as his personal amplification. Without spending 15k plus the Triton 2`s do a wonderful job.

Totally understand.

Just how do you think that Pioneer feels being called old in front of all your much, much newer gear? Sounds like you are putting it out to pasture but it has done a great job of keeping up with the rest of the rig for years and with multiple changes. Poor ole Pioneer!!

don't count the PL-41 out yet, Keith. Until I encounter something truly spectacular, it stays. I just hate the thought of anything that cuts into my music purchasing budget......

Then you need to start talking about it with something better than "the old Pioneer". Maybe Senior Statesman, Wonderful Pioneer or whatever doesn't seem to demean it when you just say the name.
