There are lots of vintage 12", 10" and 8" wide band drivers that are still reasonable in price. Look for those with grooved paper cones and alnico motors. Speakers pulled from tube consoles or tube organs can be surprisingly good. Scroll down and read what Steve D. says about them and the F-15.

The F15 is still a driver I want to load in these baffles. I am sure I'll do some research and find a 12" driver that I can mount in them at some point. If you come across a 12" driver you think would be worthwhile let me know!

So they sound fantastic! If I ditch the wings but keep the middle baffle what am I going to lose?

Bass is pretty good. As good as an 8" driver can be I guess. I have 2 rythmik subs that I turned on and they sound good and blend pretty well. Clearly not open baffle bass but good.

You've got room on the middle baffle to add bass woofers. They can fill in what's missing between your subs and the Betsy.

How about some pros and cons on going with a bass woofer on this panel and lose the wings vs new build H frame.

You could add a woofer and keep the wings as the simplest way.
The wings or the sides of the H frame have the same purpose, to extend the distance the bass wave has to travel before the front and back waves cancel each other, therefore lowering the frequency response.

That's a good thought. Is it mandatory to run a separate amp on the bottom driver to get adequate bass?

Deep down I want the Liionidas look and want to run them off of 1 amp. Any suggestions for a woofer to pair with the Betsy drivers that I could run off of 1 amp?

What amp?

It can be done with some amps, but it is just so much easier to use a separate amp (or 2 if mono) for the helper woofers.

Back when the AC DarksStar thread was going strong I just kept adding B200s.
One fullrange, then one bass only with a coil, then 2 bass only, then 3 bass only, but I had amplifiers that didn't mind the low impedance. A few went with the 1.5 way and were content.

FWIW I tried a pair of Hawthorne Augies with plate amps and the B200s and could never get them to sound right. I blamed it on the heavy cones and low sensitivity. :chin

A lot of options depend on how loud you want them to play and whether the subs are to be used or not.

My room is small 11x12 and a Sayes 46 amp has served me well, but I know it wont be enough to drive the helper woofers. The original idea was 1 FR driver and 1 amp. Sounds like it's time to modify that plan.

I'd like to phase the subs out if I start going with multiple drivers. Especially to keep what little floor space I have available.

Looks like the Lii Audio F15 are going to end up headed my way after all. Here is the long-term goal:

I would like to try the SB Audience Bianco 15 driver for the helper woofer and add an amp like the Crown XLS1002 to drive them. F15 on top and on a slim baffle like the pic attached. If this looks like it will work I'll run the F15 on the current baffle until I jump on the Crown amp and the helper woofers.

Does anyone have any experience with the SB Audience woofers?

The Qts is .57 which is not very high for open baffles.

"Qts between 0.4 and 0.7 indicates suitability for a sealed enclosure. Qts of 0.7 or above indicates suitability for free-air or infinite baffle applications".

As best I can find, The Altec 414 has a Qts of .22(I don’t know what that means) which isn’t good for open baffle.
I obviously don’t know anything about speaker or crossover design.
I use a H-frame for bottom support and a 32c/807 for top support.
Why does the 414z in open baffle sound so good to me?
And I have no desire to change.

I am ready to buy the helper woofers and have narrowed it down to these 3. If I am missing an option I should consider please chime in and tell me.

Eminence Alpha 15A - $150 each
XMAX - 3.8 mm
QTS 1.26

Lii Audio W15 - $300 each
XMAX - 15 mm
QTS .79

SB Audience 15" Bianco - $160 each
XMAX - 11 mm
QTS .57

Do you have a way to boost the bass a little if you use the SB Audience driver?
As an example, I have a pair Dayton SPA250s that can provide 6 dBs of boost at 35 hz.
You may be pleased with them on their own, but the option to eq them would be nice.

I think 2 of the W15s would be very nice, but $600 is.... guess it depends on your budget.

I'll be using a crown amp XLS 1002 . It has the ability to low pass the signal and independent volume for left and right but no PEQ to give a bump at certain frequencies.
