Opinions on these ADS speakers

View attachment 78480

Yesterday's picks. Fortunately the Fosi uses a bog standard power 12VDC power supply. Same dump source has provided many router & printer ones that connect right up. I tried it out on some ADS L200s, nice little amp!
That Sony BT speaker is a gem. My bet is that it went to the dump because occasionally the controls become unresponsive, and they need to be reset (there's a little pinhole reset button on the back).

Funny you should say that. Could not get bluetooth button to pair. As I was flipping it around I saw the reset button and did that. I mean, why not? Worked immediately after. A side project is to build a new picnic set. It will have a stove, coffee setup, & storage plus music in it. Picked up a battered Zero aluminum midsize suitcase for $10 off FBM to build out. Sony is now the music system for that. Had it running most of the day yesterday on its batteries. It truly is a gem!

Are these great speakers or just OK?

I fear I have taken the OP off in the wrong direction...

I once owned a set of L710, near mint condition. They sounded very good to me at first pass. But, the longer I listened to them the more I began to not like the bass. It was constrained with anything electronic. It sounded like they were hitting limits even when at moderate levels. So, what kind of music? Anything with synth drums, dance, pop, electronic, etc. They weren't bad but they weren't great (to me) either. L810s are decent all around though. I've had them at home (although not in the same home) but did not notice any of those issues. The L810 not my favorite ADS but a much more balanced speaker overall than the L710. IMO the L710s would do better if high-passed above 60-80Hz with an active crossover and fill out the bottom end with a subwoofer. I believe they would slam set up like that.

I liked ADS speakers until I heard more modern speakers, then I didn't like ADS speakers anymore.

(I could replace ADS here with several dozen other brands, though).

I like them...and about 20 other brands. Can't swing a dead cat without hitting something good in the marketplace.

I used to have a wall of speakers in a loft. It was fun (and looked cool). I do miss the days when the thrifts had something neat every time I visited. I just don't think they offer much beyond cheap fun- but there's nothing wrong with cheap fun.

About the only time I hit one is when I drop off donations. Rarely though is there anything good and if there is, it's been priced via the ebay crack pipe. I still love estate & yard sales plus flea markets though. Not for audio, mostly tools.

They are just plain pleasant to listen to, in the best sense of the word.

The cat-proof grilles were a plus when we lived in MA (and had cats), and I replaced the Polk 7As in the family room with 'em for several years due to the proclivities of Griswold the cat (who was, in all other respects, a fine cat).
Funny, a week after we got our kitten, I went on a mad dash to find cat-proof speakers. Cloth grilles are just so dang tempting to those with claws.

My 710's were fortuitously listed about 2.5 hours later and haven't left the setup since.

ADS, Braun, Canton, Magnat, Visonik and a few others. Most of them German which had many metal stampers and could do custom perforation at lower cost. Majority of those grilles have solid edge and punched out with custom tool.

Yeah, with the ADS at home, one day I wandered into Stereo Unlimited San Diego while the wife incinerated loooong hours in the fabric store (if you've ever experienced that, you have my sympathy), listened to a pair of Vandersteen 2s at length and concluded: "I can do that!" Maybe 100 tries later, Kestrel. The ADS did not survive my teenagers. :)

1590/2 in rosewood rare birds. Do yours have the PA1 cutouts in the back?
nope. The connections on these probably later version specimens have the terminals on the bottom and would only work with the outboard bi-amplification control. The connections on the bottom kinda suck frankly.

Ever meet Michael Kelly?

No. Somehow, even with all the shows, we never met. Couldn't help but notice his good work on the 10T. When I started consulting for Counterpoint, the 10T was thier ref for amp dev. So I had to sort out which device, the amp or the speaker, was the source of whatever shortcoming was being observed. So, yeah, did get to know them pretty well. Nice work.

Bottom connections? Wow, those are really odd boys. Then add rosewood, not many made like this. Pics, please!

This is the typical backside of the series 2 1590:
