Got Smoke ?

I just saw in the news that Chicago had the world's worst air quality this morning.

It's either the Canada fires, or it's Taco Tuesday. 🤣

Seriously though...this is the current reading here at Casa Rudy. I would have thought our rain/mist might have mitigated some of the smoke but that is not the case. We are very humid and wet today.

In fact, as I look out the window, I can see that it's probably not fog, but smoke that I'm looking at. The trees one block away are hazy. I had to do some work outside this morning and honestly didn't notice anything.

This was the Mackinac Bridge earlier today.

It's bad here today. I've never seen anything like this before. We're heading up north Thursday night and I am sure it will be worse!

First time I’ve seen it in the purple zone this year.
Same here, and our AQI for 2PM is at 235 also. The sun is trying to peek out here in the Shores.

Even my Weather Frog is sitting in smoke with a mask on. 😕

This smoke is fast-moving. Yesterday we had a very clear (smoke-wise) day with AQI solidly in the green, with a reading in the mid 30s or so. Today I was surprised to see it in the purple. It could be worse by the weekend, or it could be gone. No telling lately!

It’s not getting any better here. Boo. I hope Canada doesn’t burn down. I like Canada.

Kind of crazy in metro Detroit. We went out to lunch and then Kensington Metropark thinking we would take a hike, but when we saw/smelled the haze we bailed. You could not even see the other side other the lake, which is less than a half mile.

Came home, closed all the windows, and we are running the furnace/AC fan to filter the air. No need for AC as it is like 65.

I have a HEPA Air Purifier that I usually run in the basement. It usually runs a couple of minutes and then says, "Green Light, we are good, breath easy." I took it upstairs today and about 5 minutes after plugging it in, it was like, "Dude, you are killing me. Redlight, redlight, abort, abort, change filters immediately."

Well, our old pile of bricks we call home has no a/c, so it’s “windows open” from April-October, but I closed several today. I too recall a not unpleasant “campfire” aroma a few weeks ago; this smells more like the Windsor marina fire some years ago. Ugh.

That's what I noticed also--if it's a forest fire, it certainly smells like something other than wood is burning. My better half (who works about two blocks from the Ren Cen) says that downtown didn't smell down there as it did here at home. It really hit me this afternoon when I first posted, grabbing the mail from the front porch.

Looking at the map again, the Waukesha WI area had an AQI of 334 at 6pm, into the "hazardous" dark red zone.

It was bad in Chicago today. My throat and eyes are irritated. This is the first time I’ve seen this since I moved from California in 2005, though apparently I was less sensitive to it back then. I used to watch helicopters dump water on the brush burning in the valley behind my house on a coastal mountain.

Well this is interesting. My IPhone weather app vs AQI shows massive variances for my Zipcode. Are there different scales? I would expect this to be standardized but 213 vs. 337 is ludicrous. I hope the air is filtered at the hospital for my rehab today; it should be as it’s usually cooler in there.

I trust the government site over any third party weather sites. Another weather service I look at (powered by the heavily commercialized weather.com 🙄) is showing only 155 AQI.

The airnow.gov "Fire and Smoke Map" shows live data of all of the sensors they use to determine their reading. Zooming in, it shows the various sensors in our area, and you can click on them to get individual station readings:

And yeah, like @JoeThePop posted above, the view outside reminds me of the parties my uncle George used to throw, where all of their Canadian friends would come over to play cards, everyone smoking, polkas blaring all night long, with the air so thick you could cut it with a machete. On the other hand, maybe this smoke will finally shut up that frickin' dog next door. 🙄 The 7am update:

I think it's a sunny day...? I did see the moon last night.
