Got Smoke ?

My buddy and I used to go to a place called My Place--I think it was on 9 Mile in East Detroit, somewhere off of Gratiot. A real dive. It had a bar with bar bands on the main floor, and a dance club on the second, where we'd hang out (and in those early days of the drinking age of 21, they'd serve beer as long as your ID showed you were 18+). I used to have to stick my jacket spread out on a chair in the basement for a week to air it out...

It’s not getting any better here. Boo. I hope Canada doesn’t burn down. I like Canada.

How many fires are burning in Canada?

On Tuesday, the Canadian Interagency Forest Fire Centre reported 485 active fires burning across the country, of which 257 were out of control.
As of June 7, blazes this year in Canada had already scorched more than 9.8 million acres of forest — more than 10 times the acreage that had burned by around this time last year, officials say.

Yes. I was very familiar with My Place.

Like Rudy and John said, the air quality is awful in Chicago

Yesterday the haze was quite visible and dense from maybe 1/4 of a block's distance

I just drove along Lake St. Clair for a stretch and I could see maybe only about a quarter mile offshore. I'm staying in the rest of the day, since smoke levels are hazardous and my chest is feeling a little tight (asthma) after a quick shopping run. AQI is at 306 (as of 9am--it's 10:43am now) so it has dropped slightly but still hazardous.

That place was rickety even when we visited, and I think the whole building fell to a fire in the mid 80s. We called it "My Dive."

So, we here in SoCal have been in Gloomageddon so far this year. Seriously, less than a week of full sunny days since the new year. That and lots of rain have us poised for what might be a scary wildfire season this year.
This season, despite it being mostly gray and overcast, everything has dried out, and we're armed and ready.

We also live near the biggest wildfire causer that there is; Camp Pendelton Marine Base. They teach blowing stuff up with Howitzers, tanks, and machine guns, with lots of live fire, and tracer rounds.

Yesterday, for about three hours, or maybe even four hours straight, was a large scale automatic fire machine gun of some form, anti-tank rounds? - Of massive caliber, as you could feel the rounds from miles away, over multiple canyon ridges. And the pacing was probably in excess of two rounds per second, maybe three rps for that multiple hours of firing.

Then we went downtown, and, we hit thick yellow smoke air, brought to us by automatic anti-tank rounds from sanctioned pyromaniacs.

False alarm--I thought it was getting even smokier out (can barely see the neighbor's garage!), but now I see that 1) the doorwall glass is a little hazy outside, and 2) the inside of the doorwall glass (between the two panes) has condensation on it. If I get my lazy butt up from my work desk, it's a bit clearer through other windows. And our AQI has dropped to a "very unhealthy" 229 as of 1PM.

We're bracing for what might be coming east. Today isn't bad, relatively speaking. Somewhere around AQI of 150. A little stinky of course but not like 2 weeks ago. I'm feeling bad for you IL and MI folks.

interesting. I was wondering about this.
Yeah good to know what we’re inhaling. I was surprised to see a little league baseball game being played in the area when the air quality was at its worst. As well as an older gentleman power-walking through the neighborhood.

La la la la life goes on

I propose changing your handle from “known member” to “Wall-E”. Calling @prime minister ?

On topic, stay safe havenites and indoors if at all possible. To think my air purifier goes nuts if “my dog” passes by and cuts one, it would explode if it saw all that haze/smoke!!
Scrub that nitrogen!

Editing: hey @mhardy6647 want to talk to us about smoke particulate and composition (or dog farts as the mood may strike)? My guess is that might be up your alley

smoke and haze have been pretty bad in the Chicago area....since Tue. We are staying inside..it is supposed to let up by tonight midnight.
