2024 Audio Plans

While another unit will not have the issues from the Mods, the brittleness of the inputs will eventually claim them all.
One could probably do some custom fabrication to fix that issue but it would cost way too much to have someone do it. And it's still not original. Something a DIYer with a 3D printer could cobble together.

Any replacement plans?

Honestly. I am so fed up of the whole thing that I am just going to pack it away and forget about it for a while. This has been a long up and down journey for me, one that I didn’t document. I wish this was a success story and I could have presented a triumphant restoration. But this is very much a lost cause at this stage. Time to put it down and regroup.

It seems my future plans get sidetracked each year by other things that are totally unexpected. For example, in the last 4 months I made the following changes none of which were even under consideration a year ago:

1. I switched woofers going from Jensen P15LL to Jensen A15PM. The “new” woofers were made in 1947 and sound marvelous.

2. I reduced my crossover between woofers and midrange horn from 700 Hz to 500. I doubted the horn would go that low but it does and it made a nice improvement.

3. I went from mostly silver wiring throughout my system to nearly all copper. That was very unexpected.

I have literally no idea what will happen during the rest of 2024.

How did the silver to copper wire switch go?

No more waiting for some crazy cool horns, today at some point I hope get Trieu's WP12024 horns in the mix and get some time listening.
I'm curious about why you chose these horns and what others you have tried?

Slowly but surely the cabinets for the 604E's are beginning to take shape. Maybe I'll finally receive them this year. :)

Other than that, I'm pretty set. Maybe I'll get around to building that 6B4G PP amp I've been collecting parts for, but I'm focusing more on my car right now (projects are stacking up a bit).

How did the silver to copper wire switch go?
It’s been several months and I haven’t had any desire to go back. I still have the silver cables since I want to be absolutely sure before I let them go, but I am pretty sure they will get sold before long.

This all came about after a few recent visits to the Deja Vu Audio store followed by a few stops at the Deja Vu room at CAF. Vu used Audio Note Lexus (copper Litz) throughout each system. At the time I was using Audio Note SPx speaker cable, AN-Vx and Sogon interconnects for source cables, and a long Audio Note Isis (copper Litz) cable from linestage to amps.

I was impressed by the smooth, weighty sound of Vu’s systems yet there was no shortage of detail or speed. My first step was replacing the SPx speaker cable with Double-Lexus cables (all four bundles used for a single conductor). That went so well I tried a Lexus interconnect in place of a Sogon silver for source connections. Then a long Lexus interconnect in place of the Isis. To my surprise Lexus sounds more balanced than the more expensive Isis even if it is not quite as dynamic.

The only silver cable I am using anywhere right now is the internal wiring in my speaker where the wire from crossover to tweeter is still SPx.

Most recently I have been playing around with some DIY interconnects using vintage tinned copper wire made by Western Electric in the mid-1950s. These may end up replacing the Lexus but it’s too early to say for sure.

I've got fresh struts & shocks, a new instrument cluster, an oil-to-water cooler, and a header project using S54 headers modified to fit the N52 motor (mostly just replacing the flanges, with a little tweaking to clear the AC compressor). Not to mention some maintenance items (new idler pullies / belt tensioner / belt, new water pump & thermostat) that are due in ~ 3,000 miles.

This sounds like a good project.

Thanks. Slowly getting more and more comfortable with taking on more daunting wrenching projects. I also have plans for a helical LSD and a factory update to the hifi system in the car for USB + Bluetooth audio support waiting in the wings. The former is for tracking the car, the latter is for creature-comfort purposes.

Sweet. I run an Eaton Trutrac in my car and love it.

Sorry for the detour into car BS, everyone.

Well, I mentioned the Combox upgrade for audio purposes, so I think that counts.

I'm ditching my LOMCs and going all-in on old higher-compliance MM carts and installing a light-weight arm on my main turntable. 1982 here I come. Tonearm is on its way from Japan and the new armboard from Gem Dandy shipped yesterday.

Me as well. 👍 Realizing how much damage they are doing to records, I'm done with them. The Dynavector I have sounds OK, but certainly not worth what they want for it now, especially in light of being a lower-compliance cart and not tracking very well. I don't know where my other MC sits on the compliance range (I'd have to look it up), but I know it's more compliant as I don't hear it across the room when the volume is down.

I'm done turntable-wise, but if I ever had some spare change to splurge, I'd get the linear tracking arm I've been wanting for several years. Very low priority though.

If anything, I want a better audio rack. Both options are at or near $2K, so that's not a priority either. I may see if I can find some bamboo sheets and have some custom replacement shelves made by a local woodworker (or bamboo-worker?). My rack is a case of the metal framework being OK but the shelves are a hot mess.

We’ve talked a lot about tracking but I’m also doing this for sonic reasons even outside of tracking, though nobody believes me.
