Altec Curious in WI

Hi, all you Altec aficionados anywhere near South Central, WI! I am interested in hearing some sort of Altec speakers, either 604 duplex or 2-way horn types.
I have some very nice Ocellia PHY/HP single driver speakers, but am curious to see what the Altecs would do driven by my 2A3/45 SET amp. My room is 21' by 14' with an 8' ceiling and well damped. Ideally, I'd like to hear them in my space and would swap the Ocellias for a time if the Altec demo proved interesting.
At that point, I'd be looking to buy and the Ocellias would be for sale. Let me know if you're game!

Looking at my 150+# A7s here, that sounds like quite an ambitious plan! It be easier to move a washer and dryer down here than the Altecs, plus finding a vehicle to bring them over.

I‘m not able to do a swap at this time but if you‘d like to hear some Altecs and are up for a drive, you’re welcome to visit and hear my 2-way Altecs in 612 cabinets and some VOTT. I’ll likely be setting some gear free in the coming months so who knows, the Altecs may become available. I’m in Central Iowa.

Oh, man...sorry for the VERY late reply! Thanks for the offer to hear your Altecs. I'll let you know if I can make it out your way.

I have Altec 1003's and 1505's in the twin cities area. I use the Barcelona's as the bass cabs for the 1003's. I picked up those Barcelona's in Madison, WI two years ago! I run a 2A3 on the 1003's and 300b on the 1505's. Life is pretty good.
Welcome to the haven, @briabub . You will find many kindred spirits here.

Altec 1505s in the Twin Cities area, you say? Hmmm... 🙂

You betcha. I'm happy to host a listening session for anyone in the area. I'd also love to hear opinions on 1003, 1505, 1803, 311, 329, or Manta Rays. Personally, I like the 1003 over the 1505. The 300 Hz is a big advantage and so is the larger soundstage. Would 1803 be even better?? I run the Altec Y throat adapters on both the 1505's and 1003's and use 288 drivers full range and 802 drivers high passed at roughly 10k Hz. This was my covid project over the last 2.5 years.

Thank you! That is more for the 802 crowd, is there one for the 288 large format crowd?
Sorry - my comment was more for the OP who was looking for Altecs to listen to. By limiting to duplex / VOTT, he's missing out on a smaller form-factor that is extremely good-sounding and sensitive (102dB @ 1W/m with 414a/z woofers).

I live in the southwest suburbs of Chicago and I have a pair of Flamenco‘s with new GPA diaphragms. I’ve used the in the past with a fi X 2A3 amp and it was a great match. I’m game for a swap.

Hi, Dan. Somehow I missed your reply until today. I'd be interested in hearing your Flamencos and then consider a swap. Where in "Chicagoland" are you? I was born in Evanston and lived in Jefferson Park. Would you want to swap for "keeps" or "temps" if it works out?
Thanks, Mark

I know I'm late to this, but if you're still curious and would like hear some 604c's and feel like driving down near the town of your birth, I'd be happy to play mine for you, driven by a 46 amp.
