DIY Cornet 2 Hybrid

Do It Yourself
I've been playing records every night this week and am quite pleased.
This is dead quiet, and really dynamic.
Rolling tubes in the 6SN7 output it's a toss up between a Kenrad VT231 and a Tungsol round mica "Mickey Mouse ears "
I have one older original CV4004 Mullard and a Yugoslavian 12AX7 in the gain section.
It sounds great 😊

The CF tube has a big impact on the sound of the Cornet. I remember reading people saying the choice of CF tube makes little to no difference since there’s no gain. That is so wrong! People who relied on their ears instead discovered tube-rolling the CF is just as important for sound quality as choosing the best sounding gain tubes.

Agreed, I know from a preamp I built that was just one 6sn7 CF.
It was real a great tool for finding the characteristics of different tubes. Made some pretty detailed notes on different tubes at the time.
I like this Mullard CV4004 and would love another... but I didn't realize what they sell for now 😒

There are a lot cathode follower haters too, maybe they are in the same camp.
I am of the belief that it's more implementation dependent and they can work well in the situation.

Yeah, I have never understood the harsh comments about cathode followers. I have found them to be pretty neutral especially with CCS loading like Jim used in the Cornet.
