I'm boycotting Spotify! Forever!

i had a wonderful listening session about 5 years ago. I had a chance to just lose myself in Blue for a while, and I finally got it. I could feel what she was sharing in that album. However, that being said, I had never liked Joni Mitchell before that, and my opinion on her hasn’t changed much. As a CanCon artist, I grew up with a steady diet of her music in my childhood, but she always came across as nails on a chalkboard for me.

Im not a Spotify subscriber and I don’t like Joni Mitchell. So can someone tell me which side I should be on in this part of the discussion?

Thats funny, but I don't have that one, but I don't often listen to her these days. I am more often likely to listen to classical or jazz,
or choral of late. Ever hear one called "Summer Water' by Scott DuBois? Solo guitar, off the beaten track.

Just so that you all understand my dislike for Joni’s Voice, if I was forced to pick a version of Big Yellow Taxi to listen to, I’d take Counting Crows.

Btw, does anyone else see the irony in the writer of what is likely the biggest anti-corporate hit of all time, pressuring a corporation to silence someone she doesn’t agree with? Is she ok with spotless apples and parking lots now too?

@JohnVF Yeah, but think about how many incredible albums Joni's warm "intimate" presence inspired...ha, ha, ha!
Imagine … a world without Lisa Loeb. The horror.

;)

I too kind of find Joni’s close-mic’d no reverb vocals to be nails on a chalkboard except for Blue, where the material fits it. Some of those high notes, though… yeesh.

Yep. Never could take Joni Mitchell's vocals. I'm old enough to remember when her music got a lot of airplay on local radio stations, and nothing would make me reach for the dial faster than when she came on. Well maybe Mariah Carey's "All I Want for Christmas" can.

You can join me on the side of "I don't care". I will continue to listen to music on Spotify, and I will occasionally listen to my "Harvest Moon" CD; the only Neil Young album I have ever purchased. Things would have to be pretty egregious for me to consider boycotting something.

I applaud your level-headedness, sir.👏

Now, I’m of the opinion that Joni Mitchell only has one great album- we could also debate that?
There is no debate on this point. You are simply wrong :)

Blue is not my favorite, not even in my top 5, and I have all the Joni Mitchell LPs.
Try 'Hissing of Summer Lawns' or "Mingus'

Apropos to nothing, but radioparadise plays Joni regularly. Fortunately they provide a forward track feature.

It’s long been discussed up in Canada, that the big yellow taxi in question was a Toronto police car. Toronto police cars were bright yellow for decades, until the police got tired of being flagged down by American tourists who thought they were taxis.

The question begs to be asked: did they shuttle people to their destination?

Neutral and indifferent, obviously. :smoke

I have a free 3-month trial subscription to Spotify expiring in March, I do very much like Joni Mitchell and think she has many really great albums, far more than just one. I don't listen to podcasts at all ever, but I did enjoy Putney Swope on Turner Classic Movies last night, and I have no intention of canceling Spotify unless they fail to deliver lossless streaming by the end of my trial.

I'm not influenced by "far-left" cancel culture, modern day McCarthyism, nor mainstream media groupthink, or big Pharma, and I certainly don't look to form opinions based on knowledge gleaned from countless hours spent on the intellectual dark web, but I also personally don't much care for Joe Rogan and never did.

Which "side" am I on?
