I ran it in mono once off of a Dynaco MKIII and played Sinatra as a way of bringing the console home to its roots. After one song I pulled all that out, stopped that nonsense, and plugged my Orange guitar-amp head into it and rocked out. It surely sucked at crooning but dang was that one hell of a guitar speaker.Many classic JBL products sound best that way.

Well, huh. Something is working out here. I was listened to Dire Straits "Making Movies", particularly Skateaway and then put on Springsteen's "The River" and thought... the drum sound and reverb on these recordings sound very much the same.

It sounds like you have settled into a healthy place within the hobby. Of course the real test will come over time. The next time you are sitting down really enjoying an album but that dreaded thought "this is really enjoyable. How can I make it better." pops into your head. That is the killer for me. If i enjoy this, a little more of something has to be better, doesn't it? On a positive note for me I have been able to resist a couple of "dream" pieces of vintage gear that recently came up for sale locally. One at a decent price and the other a steal of a deal. I really had to keep asking myself if these would make my life any better or if they were just me trying to take action towards increased general happiness. I really believe that it is often better to let happiness find you where you are rather than always be pursuing it somewhere else. Luckily, the steal of a deal sold quickly so I no longer have to actively resist my own temptation.

I think anything from here will be that other 1/2 of this hobby...just playing around and me being curious but NOT for reasons of upgrading. I can't afford to.
I have a couple of carts that I want to have modified with new cantilevers and finer stylus profiles. And I still have a few turntable projects here to finish. Oh, and I'm still curious about Hypex amps. I wish there was an audio library where you could just borrow stuff and take it back after two weeks.
I have often thought the same about an audio library. A two week loan is often enough to get over the love affair with a piece of gear. Plus would take away from the worst part of the hobby for me, having to sell excess gear. Can't imagine there would be many members in such a library but I would definitely pay to join such a place. Especially if the library was responsible for repairs.
There was a cable library somewhere for high end esoteric cables. I'm not sure if it still exists. But the expectation was you buy something after figuring out what works best in your system, I assume.
The closest I ever got, and it was pretty close, was when an high end audio store moved in below my high rise in Chicago and I became friends with the owner. I had the "job" of breaking in and trying out some of the gear that came in. Best job I ever had.
I would have no real interest in a cable library but would love to be able to sign out a pioneer sx1980 for a couple of weeks, then return it and sign out a Shindo amp with a pair of altecs speakers. Maybe the next week a high end set of studio monitors. How much aggravation would be resolved if we could try top of the line gear from many different areas to see where we are the most content. If we really did end up thinking that our sweet spot was an sx 1980 it wouldn't be so bad putting out a few thousand dollars for one because we will have had the opportunity to compare it to all types of other options.
I still think you could damp out that cabinet a bit more and drive the JBL as a .1 subwoofer.

I think I'll have to really figure out how to balance a 3-point suspension table, get that "Linn Bounce', first, so it can bop along to the sub in the cabinet.
Well done spot of writing, sir. Sometimes the journey is exhilarating, but it’s nice to reach a destination. Getting there is 1/2 the fun. Being there is the bigger half : )
