Interesting. I compared my old Gallos to latter aluminum balls and newer 3.1 Ref and liked my old speakers more. There is something about these poly balls that just sounds right to me.

I had a pair of Poly Reference, I used the Bass Balls of those to get a pair of Aluminum Reference. Then I sold those to purchase the 3.1. Then Anthony and I upgraded those to 3.5 in his basement workshop. I felt the 3.5 was a big step up from the 3.1.

So, when I set up my room, I placed the main L&R speakers to go behind the screen, and pretty much left well enough alone. Initially I augmented the bass with my sub while in stereo mode, but the integration was never perfect, and I started listening to them on their own. Bass was lacking, but was more tuneful and articulate. A couple of months ago I tried adding some baffle boards behind them to see if a closer boarder would reinforce the bass some, but that was a dead end. Then on a whim, a couple of weeks ago I moved them forward about 3 feet. Damn, I should've done this sooner! I have to move them back and forth for movies vs. music, but the performance in two channel mode is vastly improved. Much more bass response, and better front to back soundstage layering too. Thankfully my speakers aren't too heavy/large to prevent me moving them for their different purposes.
Moving your speakers around your room is really worth experimenting with...
