I have 2 WE 421a from the 1950's, but want to add the NOS Domino plate Tung Sol as well

I thought the WE421a were the same as the Tung Sol dominoes?

My understanding is that Western Electric never built 421a tubes but just rebranded the Tun-Sol 421a tubes.

Well supposedly but it's not marked a WE, so the tube can be found a little cheaper. Then I'll have 3 top end 421a's

I’ve got four NOS domino plate 421a. Not sure the years.

the date code is right below the "Electric" script. (in the one I uploaded it's 6039. 39th week, 1960)

Here are my four. Any ideas on the production dates? They’re all labeled Tung Sol, only one of them says 421a/5998 on the base, the rest only say 5998. All are identical internally with a getter at the top and bottom.

How much did it cost you?

I‘m the very lucky buyer, I couldn’t pass it up when I read that it has the Finemet output transformers & chokes, the Duelund caps, and the rest of the top quality components. Oliver has built all my lowest powered DHT SET amplifiers: 71a, 46, and 801A. Love them all and each has it own very unique sonic flavor or signature. All solid amps that compete with the very best.

I guess Carlos can let us know but Oliver’s amps rarely need discounts to sell and I was actually in line to buy it but Carlos snagged it quick!

I’ve been changing tubes recently and noticed today that the 417As started to darken. I’ve had these in before and didn’t notice but that was with different 45s. Bias problem?

I have a new Oliver Sayes surprise coming in the next couple weeks... was supposed to be done this week, but unforeseen circumstances have pushed it back.. ugh.. I'm so impatient. This amp will be using a tube that has not been mentioned in this entire thread

Well, mine came in this week. A bad tube (not mine) took it out immediately on the first power up after unboxing. Whatever happened with the tube caused one channel to go badly into distortion and the other not quite as badly. Problem still persists with my own tubes. It will be going back for repair first week of November.

I was really disappointed after such a long wait but stuff happens. I will let Oliver fix it up and replace the tubes he sent with it and then ship it on back to me.

my oli amp developed a problem (not immediately like yours) -- there was a bulging cap -- and he took it back and fixed it; been fine ever since

That under hood shot was before it was sent to me. I didn’t bother popping it open after the failure, just boxed it right up.

Thanks! Yeah me too. I’m picking up some speakers tomorrow I had built to use with this amp. Fingers crossed for a quick turnaround in November.
