Omega speakers

Anyone own or try a pair? I would love another pair of efficient speakers in the stable to be able to use my Scott 299C. I was thinking of grabbing another pair of ZU DWs as I enjoyed my time with them. But I have seen a few of the Omega monitors in some systems and it got me wondering. Anyone have any impressions they could share?

I had Super Omega 3XRS with RS5s. I was initially impressed but something about the midrange/lower treble never quite sounded right to me. But I've had issues with all the single driver speakers I've tried even the highly regarded Airtight Bonsai.

In the pursuit for greater efficiency, we tried a pair of OMEGA speakers - with our [now sold] FIRST WATT J2 amplifier.

Pretty sure they were the SUPER 7 model - certainly, they had the larger, single driver configuration.

We found them pretty rolled-off in the tops, so they didn't work for us.

The J2 is spectacular in the tops, so we looked elsewhere and ended-up with the KLIPSCH RP-160M.

The KLIPSCH are still working superbly well with our LEBEN CS300F amplifier - but the RP-160M does prefer a larger room as the bass is generous.

Hope this helps...

I currently own two pair and have owned two other pair.

The Omega Super Alnico Monitors were very revealing and had a magical midrange. Bass was lean but ok. The highs were great but there was a slight edginess from time to time. I attribute this to the whizzer. I’ve experienced this with other dual cone drivers.

I currently own a pair of the original Super 3 monitors identical to these: 6Moons Review. I updated the drivers with the latest RS5 4.5” drivers. I love this speaker. The OEM driver produces more bass, a “juicier” sound, better highs, is more forgiving yet more revealing at the same time. I bought them from a guy in the West Village who was driving them with a Scott 222C To great effect. They had the Fostex drivers then and could be a little shouty. The RS5 driver fixes that. On the Audiocircle forum another owner was looking to upgrade from these speakers for use with a 299. He was thinking about moving up the line in Omega. I recommended he update the driver and his plans to upgrade speakers were immediately put on hold. I like these speakers with near-wall positioning for boundary reinforcement. The downsides are a lack of real bass (figure -3dB around 65hz or so) and limited dynamics. They will start to sound compressed afte 5 watts or so. They are 94 dB efficient so they don’t need much power, but I would not choose them for a larger room.

I also own a pair of Super 3 HO Monitors (These in Ebony). They are a 1.5 way, with the lower driver brought in below 500hz. It fills in the mid and upper bass while preserving most of the single-driver qualities. They are much more dynamic than the single-driver version with much fuller bass. They don’t go that much lower but do so with more authority. They work really well paired with my Rythmik F8 stereo subwoofers.

Omega speakers are a tremendous value but as you go up the line the value gap begins to narrow. The dual driver tower models start to cost real money. For my money the monitors are the sweet spot and compete favorably at their price point (and above). Materials quality is first rate, craftsmanship is top notch, and Louis will provide custom veneers, wiring, or even a full custom build.

@Roscoe65
Great to hear from someone with much wider experience with the OMEGA line.

They most certainly are attractive and nicely finished speakers - for the money - and I love their simplistic design approach; not to dissimilar to the BLUMENSTEIN approach.

I hear you when you talk about the "sweet-spot" in the line-up. This is so true of most speaker brands and in my experience, often the sweet-spot is the level 2 or level 3 option - in a line-up of 5 or more. Typically, it is the model that made their name in the first place.

It's very good to know where the OMEGA sweet-spots might be lurking...

For me the sweet spot in the Omega line is likely the Compact Alnico Monitor (CAM). You could probably get any veneer you could think of for under $2,000. Like all Omegas (and probably most efficient speakers) they are very revealing and work better with tubes than solid state. Appropriate system matching is recommended.

I am still not convinced on them to be honest. I just do not know if they can match the value of the Zu DW. This is all just a mental exercise for now and a biased one at that. I have owned the Zu. Not the Omega. But I do like that we are finally getting some real world experiences here. The goal would be to allow me to once again use the Scott amp. I love that amp.

You need to be realistic about what you want the speakers to do for you. Omega speakers will do well in a smaller environment within their limits. Better IMO than the Zu. However, if you are looking for bass or to fill a larger room you may want a different speaker.

The Scott puts out about 15-20 wpc. That gives you at least 12dB of gain. Any speaker that would thrive with the Leben CS300 would do well with this amp. The ideal speaker would depend on your specific use case.

I know you know Omega's. What is the largest room you would use CAM's in?

The owners manual and a schematic are attached.

They will work in the same sort of spaces that the Harbeth P3-ESR or KEF LS50. It is a single 6.5” driver with somewhat lean bass. It does well with some room help. A 12 x 15 room would be just about perfect.

I was considering CAMs, but my room is way too big. I did get a NIB Omega Double Deuce sub from their custom shop for less than half price and it's quite musical. I'm using it with Heresy 4's and Dennis Had's Inspire gear. Great match.

BTW, I'm FloridaBoy on the big Inspire thread.

Omega drivers all have something of a rising response. I’ve found that tubes and SET’s in particular tend to match well to the drivers’ bass characteristics. With a high-quality class AB SS amp they sounded slow.

The overload characteristics of alnico and SET’s are similar. They both compress in a graceful manner that doesn’t sound like you hit a brick wall.

I believe there is now an Omega AlNiCo 10” monitor; roughly SAM size. Might not have the same degree of rising response.

Seems like SET amps with ”weak” drivers could be ideal for these types of speakers. Like my 6C6 driven 2A3... 🤔

For years my desktop system was the Omega 3R speakers driven by a Decware Zen amp and a KLH sub under the desk.

It was a wonderful combination. I was sorry to see it go.
